gas tank capacity!!!!!

I suppose I could wait untill I ran it a littlt lower But it,s my chance to complain! I have only had this Jeep two week,s and I have put 23 gallons of gas in It.. 12 the first 11 the second. I at first wanted to run it back to the "E" but it,s cold here in the midwest, and I didn,t want to run Out! What is the capacity of the Tank? I have a 1989 cherokee liminted and under Normal cicrcumstances what kind of gas milage should I expect? It seem,s to run p[retty even. It does have a crack in the manifold albeit small.. I only let it get down to half.but if this holds true ,this jeep holds 22plus gallon,s and will only get 200 miles to the tank! am I In the ballpark?...

SUPER BOWL!!!

I think you have a 20 gallon tank and should be able to get around 15 mpg?

Early (pre ~ 1992) cherokees came with a standard 13.5 US Gallon tank, some came with an OPTIONAL 20.0 US Gallon tank.

here in chicago! I brought this jeep at a aution from some guy up in northen chicago he had quit a bit of work done ....new catalytec muffler sterring parts about 1500 worth on a paper,he left in the Jeep! I can.t understAND WHY THE GAS MILAGE IS SO POOR,UNLESS THE CAPACITY IS WRONG.... i WILL KNOW TOMMOROW WHEN i REFILL THE TANK (AT THIS TIME i,M GETTING ABOUT eight mpg)AS NICE AS THIS JEEP RUN,S iT,S UNBELIVABLE I.ll just have to get like the rest of the Jeep Owners and take pleasure in GETTING the JEEP RIGHT!!!!

There is a couple of questions that needs to be ask ....
What size tires are on it?
secound have you taken it on the freeway and seen if the speedometer is correct? Check the mileage at one mile post and see if it runs correct at the next. This will tell you if it is right. Re-geared or a larger tire size will make your MPG seem off. Check this first since this Jeep is still new to you.

 I was reading your post and it brought a smile to my face ,when I saw the FREEWAY expression! We don,t have freeways here in chi we have expressway,s!!! II once stationed in the WEST used the expression FREEWAY ,then but I am going to check the tire,s and today I am going to fill up ($1.79 reg) "OUCH" and see just what the GAS situation is ,and on the way I will check the speedometer and make sure a mile is a mile!!

Around these here parts we either call it the interstate or the highway. No freeway or expressways around here i guess. :D

WELL!!! I am back at the keyboard! And I have to report, that this JEEP is running 735/70,s and I put 18 gallons of gas in it. only drove it about 180 miles..! Now I am going to have to have some suggestions as to how to get the MPG,s up so I can Pass a gas station or TWO! eny and all suggestions WILL be appreciated!! :( Thank,s ROPE

Oh, an I checked the miladge and it seems to be a mile is a mile!!

Tj and Kj owners check this out

BoY .XJ! you really know how to hurt a guy!!!first you post that extremly good looking "88" that looks New ,then flame my TIRES(LOL) so I made a HUGE mistake in the typeing ,(735 does sound alfully big)but none the less If I want to dream of a Jeep I can always look at the picture........BTW does a Jeep with a Half million miles get good GAS miladge?

I would think any gas mileage at half a million miles is good gas mileage... have you tried the air filter/injector cleaner, etc?

Thanks, I guess that was a compliment  :p

It looks new because I got tired of the original paint job (which didn't last and looked like crap for a long time) and I finally decided to have it repainted.

When I last drove the Cherokee on a daily basis I used to get approx. 18-21 MPG average. The original engine went ~350,000 miles. The one that was in it last only had about ~55,000 miles on it, so was relatively new. I got the above listed gas mileage with the engine COMPLETELY stock (no special filters, etc..), so don't think that Jeep engines are incapable of reasonable gas mileage w/o aftermarket stuff.

BTW, I'm speaking in the past tense about it becuase I haven't driven it recently... it's undergoing some special modification

speaking of that, what are these mysterious modifications your cherokee is undergoing? i'm curious...

Power mods continued

Hi Joerope

I have had a piggyback Unichip fitted, and new branches together with the Catalytic converter removal. Cost is around $500

I now get 550-600Km's per 66Litres or 10.5 -11 Litres per hundred Kilometres.

Dont now how many litres are in a Gallon, sorry.

This equals 375Miles on one standard tank with 10 litres spare.

Hope this helps.

Regards Mike

Give me a little more time... then everything will be revealed .
I hope to be done with it soon - hopefully by the end of the month - I'm working on it as fast as I can on the weekends. I want to wait and share it when it's a completed project...

Sorry for the tease :p
