Going newer... Got Questions.

RE: OT-Ordering Pizza in the future

Hey yall' it has been awhile since I have been in the forum. Got rid of the CJ7 about 10 months ago. Boy do I miss it. I am looking at spending no more than $10,000.00 on a newer Jeep. Break down the differences once again on the TJ's, and YJ's. My personal options I want are: I perfer the look of the TJ, need AC, and V6. I will look at lifting etc, later on what is the best choice year, model etc... Thanks Guys!

I would say that 10k should get you a decent TJ... I would go for the later TJs though, at least a 99... I just heard that they still were gettin the bugs out in 97 and 98.

Or you could get one heck of a YJ for 10k! Already built up and everything!
Just make sure its not beat on... been there.

Don't hold out for the v6, you had better settle for the 4.0L I6 if you want one soon. The v6 is hard to find ;)

What mods are you looking at? There's a big difference in cost when it comes to modifying a TJ v. YJ.

Also what are you primarily going to be using the jeep for?

It sounds like your looking for a more comfortable ride with more of the comforts. TJs are definitely the way to go. They are a better ride and just as capable off road. For 10K you can get a real decent TJ. Definitely hold out for the I6. The 4 bangers just arent worth it.

Here is the deal, I will be using this for a dual purpose vehicle. I just bought a 2002 Chevy HD Crew Cab decked out. Not wanting to put the miles or gas through it... 6.0 V8 nuff said. Because I just took a new job downtown Tampa, it's a trek, hence the AC. So, I will be using it to go back and forth from work, but also in the woods, beach etc .. like my other CJ, but not as extreme. Not to mention I want it to tow my Jetski, so the V6 is the way to go. I have had the 4bangers... not thrilled with it but it has it's good points (gas mileage, torque..) Hope this helps thanks for the input.

Welcome back!

Not trying to open up a YJ/TJ debate, but for $10K you could pick up a nice YJ Sahara, which has a nice looking trim package(color matched flares, etc), which should have the 6 cyl, and AC. You would still have enough left over in that budget for a top quality lift kit and tires.

The ride of the YJ with a good set of lift springs will be an improvement to ride/handling from your CJ7, but a TJ would be even "cushier". The only drawbacks to a TJ I can think of worth mentioning are cost related, as they cost more to buy and to lift.

I'm sure you'd be happy with either one. Let us know when you get one!

What do you mean, I see them in the paper all the time around here with V6's in them ;) lol

RE: Re: RE: kumho mud tires

cant speak for everyone but if you want AC you might want to lean twds the TJ - bought my 91 YJ w/AC when i lived in orlando and the setup it uses (dealer installed, under dash) never worked well - and forget about letting it help w/defogging the windshield - not a good design.... TJ looks like it would work better (integrated into the dash instead of bolted under it!)

RE: body parts, hood

The under dash type AC is aftermarket, not stock - at least that was the case with the later YJ's.

as much as i love my yj a tj is newer and will have less things that are about to wear out or break down, thats the way to go. i replaced so much stuff right when i got mine it was ridiculous, drove fine when i bought it but a month later, heh. TJ;s are also more user friendly when it comes to lifting them and such, they tend to be easier to take apart and put back together whereas most yjs are usually neglected and have bolts and other things stuck together permanently

Control arms, adjustable track bars, death wobble - I couldn't disagree more.

ehhh i dunno, ive been through some hellacious yj's and, control arms arent a huge thing to deal with, and most the time you leave the at least the top ones on and they keep the axle somewhat in place. then you just take it to the alignment shop and they fix all the stupid little problems. i just got done lifting a yj today and had to cut every one of the frame hanger bolts out, which wasnt bad cuz i have a plasma torch but we couldnt get the damn things to budge my hand or with air tools or breaker bars, and then the sway bar links on yj's are so incredibly difficult to remove that its just insane, ive seen em pop out but most of the time theyre frozen in there. they all have their pros and cons but id rather be lifting a tj for someone else than pulling my springs and all that hell

I didn't have trouble bringing my TJ up. I guess I got lucky because I didn't go that far up (2"). I want to 2" BL it in 2005, we'll see. Lady, good luck on whatever you choose! The truck sounds sweet!

Am I the only one with horrible gas mileage? I know for a fact that my dads 2003 big block V8 (gas) with tow package Silverado gets better gas mileage then my '01 TJ. Since I've lifted it (4", and 33"s) my gas mileage is about 12 mpg. And that's city or freeway driving! Forget about mileage if you're towing anything. Before the lift it was only between 13-16 mpg. I got almost 20mpg freeway with my '91 Silverado V8. I love my Jeep, but gas efficient it's not!

Fuel efficient they're not (the ol' "brick on wheels" - not very aerodynamic). Have you re-calibrated your speedometer since mounting the 33's? If not, you're probably getting the same mileage you were before the lift, the speedo/odometer is just giving you faulty info. Just a thought. I still wouldn't trade my gas-guzzling 4banger Jeep for anything!
