i have a 4.0 ho motor in an 92 cherokee im parting out. my 4.2 runs great but both the main seal on the motor and transmission leak. im considering pulling the whole drive train and doing a head swap seal fix and transmission swap . would i be better off picking up a 304 or 360 rather than the 4.0 head modification and swap ? I'm tired of the puddles in the driveway. I like the carb ( motorcraft 2150) and would keep that to save money. i believe the xj has a AW4 trans that is dry and strong and i might as well change my np207 for the np 231 while i'm at it. whats ur ideas fellas ???( an ladies !)

I'd go with the HO head, AW4, and 231. Keep in mind that the AW4 clocks the 231 lower in the XJ than in the YJ, so you will lose some ground clearance unless you redrill the tailhousing of the AW4 to clock the 231 upward.

Do the 4.0 head swap. I did mine about 4 years ago and have loved it since. Redrilling the tailcone to reclock the t-case isn't hard to do either. Just make a template and then redrill.

thanks ! the ol 258 is knockin away but she still gets me to work every day ! got to make her last till april or may to get enough vacation time to perform the required surgury !
