I have a 1994 jeep wrangler 4x4 4 cyl 5 spd. I need a new t-case. The tag on my t-case tag says 231 J is there such a thing as a NP231 (without the J) and are there 2 diffrent NP231 J (one with 21 splines and one with 23 slpines) if there are two are they taged diffrent. I am trying not to tear out my t-case just to count splines HELP

the J is for jeep i believe. The 4 cyl's all came with 21 spl. Yes other makes also use the np231. chevy's come to mind (s-10/blazer)

Welcome to the Z. You have a 21 spline 231j. I rebuild a lot of 231's, let me know if you need any parts or advice.

Where are you located?

Englewood, Florida
Thanks for the info. can you help me find one. I can only spend around 150.00 to 200.00 (this amount includes shipping) I know not much to work with but I am on a tight budget raising 4 boys on my own, not alot left after them?

is there a difference between the ones in the jeep and the ones in an s-10. because i have the one out of an s-10 and you can pick them up at junk yards everywhere for about 150. The small junk yard i went to had 14 s-10 blazers, so they are quite abundant.

Yes, they're different and you can only use a few of the parts but not the entire case. The 231c found in Blazers and S10's has the following differences: input shaft, mounting flange, output, etc.

A 231 from a Cherokee may fit if you can find a late '80s model with the 21spline input, or from a 4cyl XJ. XJ's are much more abundant than Wranglers in junkyards.

I still think your best bet is Craigslist or Ebay.
