How do I check Pinion Bearing Pre-Load?

Need to put in a new Pinion Seal on my 99 TJ, (Dana 35), and the Tech. manual says to check bearing preload before removing pinion nut. Looks like if I just install a new crush collar instead of trying to re-use the old one, what difference would this make?

Has anyone else done this? I know that as many leaking Dana 35`s that are out there, surely someone has. I just know that as much trouble as 35`s have with pinion bearings , the torque on this must be precise.

turn the pinion nut with torque wrench
note the torque it takes to rotate the yoke,you'll have to check specs to see where ya need to be
