Greetings everyone! My name is Jeff and I purchase my first jeep last night!:D However... The drive home, (2.5hrs) turned into 3.5 hrs. The jeep was runnin fine for about an hr and then it started chokin and buckin a little, then more. I ended up being towed hm by my wife:redface:. Any ideas on what the problem is? It is the 6cyl 4x4 with 120k mi. Wife is upset, please help!

Start with the basics. Fuel and fire, which one is not there?. Welcome to Jeepz.

Welcome to Jeepz!

If it was running and started to sputter then stalled I would start with fuel.Does the gauge work and is there any gas in the Jeep?

It's common for the catalytic converter to fail if it's original, the catalyst will expand as it warms up and choke the engine until it dies. A good test is if the jeep runs well when cold, and gradually runs worse when warming up.

Otherwise, the stock Carter carb is notorious for running poorly as it gets older.

I had a trans am at one point, that I punched out the inside of the cat, is this an option with my jeep or would it be better to just replace it?

Also, I noticed it smelled of gas while driving home, any ideas on that?

It is a carb. I had a couple minutes to play w it today, turned out one of the plug wires on the cap was not connected, the contactor was crammed up inside the boot. Also one of the vaccuum lines were disconnected. It does have a ticking when it is idling and if it is not under load at low rpms. Hopefully it is not a big deal, I will change oil this wkend. Any thoughts?

Sticking Lifter or valve? With a 160k it is kind of common unless the engine has been rebuilt.Should not be any big deal.

Welcome to JEEPZ! I had a lifter ticking in mine at one point, so when I did an oil change I replaced one Qt with Lucas Oil Treatment and now no more ticking! Some of the guys on here said they have used ATF to fix a sticking lifter.
