I need Help with my CJ5

My CJ5 is an Ok vehical, but it has a few problems and I need a straight answer for them. I brought it to a "jeep specialist" in my area, but every time I get it back the problem is not fixed, and, actually, it seems to be worst than when I brought it in. For instance, it would bogg down and then stall out while I would be pulling up to a stop sign or red light. I brought it in to be fixed by him, and he said he turned up the idol. While i was driving to school today it was doing it again. I had it running this morning for a while to warm up before I left. I know I need a new mechanic, but he is the one that put the engine in for me, and he knows my jeep. Would it be that easy to go to another mechanic? Also, there aren't many Jeep mechanics around me at all. I don't know what to do. The jeep also shakes while it is in second gear. (It is an automatic) Do you think I need a new transmission? I love this jeep, it is my dream vehical, and i don't want to get rid of it, but sometimes i think i have to because it is hopeless. This guy is just screwing me around. I really need some advice. IF you have the infamous Carter two barrel carb, you probably have the idle tube problem. It involves some relative simple work on the carb. (Search on Google.com using something like "jeep idle tubes" and take the info to your mechanic.)

My 76 CJ5 has a one barrel, so no problem. My new (to me) 80 CJ7 had the two barrel Carter, and I finally replaced it with a small Weber which is super.

I am not a fan of automatic but that is probably not your problem.

I had the exact same problem on my CJ7 where it would not idle when coming to a stop. It seemed to get progressively worse regardless of the engine being warmed up or not.

When i took it in to my jeep specialist, they were recommending a carburator rebuild. Seeing how the carter carburators are NOTORIOUS for this kind of flakey behavior, I chose to completely replace the carb with a weber and its been running fine ever since...

Which engine do you have? 258 or 304? I thought that the pre-1980 Carters were better than the later ones (like the one I have). If it is a bad carb, you do have some options. If its a 258, you can go with a weber or there's a popular switch to a motorcraft 2100 that is supposed be excellent and inexpensive.



Sorry I can't help much with the shaking in second gear... but I'm also wondering how you got a CJ5 with an automatic in it. They never came that way stock... and generally I thought that they were too short to fit an auto transmission in.

My 79 CJ 5 with the 304 does this after it rains. My carb and possibly fuel system are jacked up. I am putting a new intake manifold (not needed) and carb (needed) on mine in the spring because of this problem. If it runs different when there is moisture in the air (rain snow etc) I put a bottle of "heet" in every fuel fill up and it fixes it for awhile. I would also like to quote a line from the movie "bluestreak" "sometimes you need to feed a little speed to your ride" when my cj starts to get a little sluggish I hard accelerate like on a freeway on ramp and put my foot in it and accelerate as fast as I can up to about 65mph I have heard the term "blow out the carb or carbon" and then she runs good for the rest of the day.
