My carb has been F-ed up for a year now and I finally had it rebuilt. It actually idled yesterday so I drove it to the beach now it's back to its old ways, not idling!!! It wasn't dirty or in bad condition. by the way it's a 2 barrel off a 4.2. Any help would be appreciated.

There is only one real way to fix a Carter once and for all. Carefull remove it and throw it just as far out into the nearest dump site as you can the with even more care install a brand new Webber or Motorcraft. Good luck tug

Get a motorcraft core from the junkyard and a cheap rebuild kit from the parts store. Pretty simple to rebuild. I had less than $50 in my last 600cfm Holley going this route.

Keep the carter. With everyone throwing them out as fast as they can get them unbolted.....one day somebody doing a resto will pay you big bucks for that junk.

Jeepster05 - One of the reasons I asked about that fix that is posted in the Jeepz How-to sect is I work with a guy who has an 87 YJ and Carter idling troubles. I was goint to recommend it to him but if it doesn't really work I don't want to waste his time. Anybody had any success with that fix???

Before I rebuilt the thing I printed that how-to. I had the carb on my kitchen table taken apart then I realized I used all my Gumout on new years as somewhat of a super lighter during the fireworks so I didn't complete the process. haha. I just got under my good and tightened down the bolts to the carb and set the idle up a tad and now it's idling again but i doubt it will be long before i have another problem with that darn POS.

Twisted- I have done this to my Carter and it worked great. My experience reads just like the intro on the how-to page. I would recommend it to anybody. It was one of the first things I had to do when I bought my CJ and it only takes a few minutes. I didn't drill them out, just cleaned it. The problem has not come back.

I think all threads involving Carter carbs and heater motors should be referenced to older threads.
I hate to be crotchity, but doesn't anybody read. Put a Motorcraft carb and a Blazer heater motor on there.
Problem solved, town saved, tragedy averted!!!

That is pretty funny, but it could be said for so many topics. Yeah, some threads sure do get repetitive, but you never know when somebody may shed some new info or ideas on ya but if not and it helps somebody out anyhow then great!

Check out this guy for carb parts. He is located in Phoenix area.

Anyone swaping the Carter for a MotoCraft; the adapter plate is made by Mr. Gasket and the part number is 1937.

I wonder if there is a Mrs. Gasket? What would SHE be like?
