Ignition trouble

I have a 58 CJ5 that has been totally restored thus far. I a, attempting the first engine start. I have a new ignition coil with internal resistor. I have a new distributor with no points. I am getting power at the coil and the distributor but am not getting a spark from the coil to the distributor. Everything is grounded and tests show I am getting power everywhere. I have no idea why I am not getting a spark. Any ideas? Everything is ever new or rebuilt so I don't think any items are bad it's just bad installation.

If you're getting a signal from the distributor to tell the coil to throw a spark and it doesn't, I would guess that you got a bad coil. Or you have it wired backwards. Seems that there's been a rash of bad coils around here lately.

don't the power go through the coil first then the dist? When you say no points, what type of dist do you have? If you have a ignition control module I would look there, your local auto shop can test them. When you are checking power, are you using a muti meter or just a light tester. While cranking the engine you should have 12V at the coil and dist if not coil is bad

Best way to test if you have spark coming out of the coil is to take the coil wire out of the distributor and shove a screw driver in the end of the coil wire...hold the metal part of the screw driver over a hose clamp or something metal and have somebody crank the engine. You should see little sparks coming out....and dont worry...if you are not holding the metal part of the screw driver you will not get shocked.

Also verify that your coil is grounded. test by putting your test light to the power side of your battery to the ground on the test light to verify ground.

If you have power and no spark...replace the coil

I had the original Carter YF professionally rebuilt and discovered I had #2 and #4 spark plug wires backwards. Messed with timing a bit and she runs absolutely perfectly. I am not a fan of the Solex Carbs. Original Carter is much better. I could not even get the engine to turn over with the Solex.
