Installing lift

RE: Torque

I am planning on installing a lift on my '9 YJ. I'm either doing a 4" BDS lift or a BDS AAL. (It depends how much money I get for my birthday in two weeks) How much work is it for someone to do in a garage with jack stands, jacks, air tools and hand tools? Or should I really pay to have it installed  . I've done suspension work on early model Camaros so I have some experience with suspenions.

thanks

The lift should be fairly simple to install. I installed the lift on my cj7 by myself in a weekend, but with enough friends it can be done in a matter of hours. Just be sure to soak anything that will need to be unscrewed in pb blaster or liquid wrench well before you try to remove it.

RE: Zipper on a soft top?

Right on, do it yourself and save 500 bucks. I had little experience with suspensions and a buddy and I did mine.

Do it yourself. Not only to save the money, but to get to really truly know your Jeep and your suspension. If you ever have a problem on a trail or anywhere else you won't be ignorant of what is there.

Anyone with a bit of common sense and patience can do it. Take your time and be safe with jacking.

By the way, a 3.5" BDS kit on a YJ was my first lift install. I did it in my driveway. BDS had good instructions.

If you've rebuilt the suspension on a Camaro, the YJ will be a breeze for you.

RE: thanks again to the jeepz guys

Junkpile hit it right there. And YJ suspension is SOO easy to work with. Once you're in there for 3 minutes, you'll be glad you decided to take on the project

done 2 lifts on YJ's in my garage - as long as the bolts come undone its about 1 wknd and an 18 pack - taking your time...

Well the nolts aren't coming off. I can't get the u-bolts loose. I have an impact wrench and liquid wrench but so far nothing has worked! What do I do now? Right ow Im just soaking it all and praying. Please help

I couldn't get my U bolt nuts off either. I took an angle grinder to the U bolt near the axle and cut it about half way through or more. (I didn't want to hit the axle tube so I didn't go all the way.) Then you can just sheer the darn things off by cranking on the nut again.. The kit should have new U bolts, so you don't need them to come off in one piece.

Call me lazy.....but that's as much time as I waste with U-bolts. You're not going to re-use them anyway are you? If the wrench won't spin, fire up the cutting torch

Re: RE: New Rims 15 or 16"?

PB Blaster & breaker Bar
-or-
Sawzall
-or-
Cutting Wheel
-or-
Torch

Take your pick.

I did a 3 in lift on my YJ and I used pb Blast about a week before and sprayed each bolt down every night and then they came off pretty easy

Im soooo close to being done! For some reason I can't get the shock to fit inthe back. The tube is hitting the axle before the bushing gets far enough in the bracket. Any idea what may be wrong or how to fix it? Everything else is on and its sitting on its wheels now. Ill post some pics when I get some nice weather.

RE: heater hoses

turn it over, run the tube up top and the rod at the axle
I was gonna originally do that til I was told that the shock would eventually blow out and have a very short life. Thanks anyway currupt. Still need help guys any other ideas.

New wrenching injury!

That depends... some shocks can be mounted either way.

I remember mine being tight, but not that bad. Did the kit come with shims to put between the axle and the springs?

Re: newbie also

Well I finally got it. I hit a short trail with the one shock off and something shifted. I think the springs had bound up when they were torqued down and that had caused the problem. Now its all done. Thanks for all of your help guys. As soon as I get a chance to take some pics Ill try and post them. Thanks again for all of your help.
