Jeepy's losing oil...

So, I had smelled burning oil, and finally decided to find out what it was... I have an oil leak, and as near as I can tell, it is coming from a squishy gasket-looking thing, directly above the oil drain bolt, connecting the oilpan and the thing behind it. That's where I think it is leaking, anyway, it's dripping off of the aforementioned thing behind it... It's not too bad of a leak, but it is causing me concern; there's oil everywhere underneath. What are my options? What is the squishy thing, and how hard is it to repair the leak? Any thoughts are more than appreciated.

If it's just your oil pan gasket, drain the oil, remove the pan, replace pan with new gasket and sealant, change oil filter, add new oil and be done with it. It should take you a half hour if you stop in the middle and take a 15 minute break.

I already have the FSM, thanks you so much for hosting that, it's been a lot of help so far... I was not sure that the leaky part was the gasket; thought the gasket was the one that went all around the pan... It seems to have stopped for the time being, oil and filter were really quite overdue for a change  , once I did that, leak stopped, and pressure hopped back up to normal (rather than flatlining at stop signs)... Again, thanks for all your help, and for listening to my questions...

Nothin' spells oil leak like thin dirty oil.

i just got the FSM from ya dingus thanks.

is he talking about the bell housing?? anyone think it might be a rear seal??

You know the sick part...

Hi,

Your description sounds like the rear main seal to me, which is not fun. We need a better description or picture to help you further

I have no idea why it is not working... Thank you Yahoo GeoCities... If you were laying on your back, and you slid under the Jeep from the front, and looked up at the oil drain bolt, it would be dripping on your forehead... Follow the oil drain bolt up the back of the oil pan, there is some sort of squishy seal thing, then you come down the front of another pan (trans fluid?) It is leaking at this seal at the top back of the oilpan, directly above the drain bolt...

exhaust manifold studs

is that a one or two piece seal? can the old one be cut and rolled out, and a new two piece put in?

It's definitely the rear main seal that is leaking. Good to finally be back; computer decided to have a heart attack and crash it's hard drive a couple weeks back, I'm only just back online... Anyways, I made the very expensive mistake of taking it up to my friendly neighborhood Chrysler-Jeep dealership to get the CD changer looked at (I'm one of those kind of guys who if something is still halfway working, I don't want to replace it with a new one till it totally breaks) While it was in, I told them that I thought the rear main seal was leaking... And they looked at it... To look at the seal and CD changer cost me $115.00. To repair the seal would have cost me $685.00, with the CD changer coming in close second at $660.00 for a new one, or $200.00 to have it shipped out and repaired. Since I do not make a small fortune every paycheck, I opted to have the changer shipped. As for the seal, it is a very slow and gentle seeping leak, not causing me too much grief, so my Dad is going to help me do that when we have to take everything apart anyway to correct the eventual low oil pressure scenario that the I-6s are prone to at higher mileage. The way I pour the miles on, should be within a couple years if it happens around 100,000 miles. I'm still gonna shop around and see just how bad the dealership was raking me on this one...
