Just found out I have 3.07's

I got my build sheet for my jeep from jeep.com. I got the D35 with 3.07. It surprised me, I really thought I had 3.73's. I want to get a 3 inch lift (probably black diamond, or something around that price range) and 33" BFG mud terrains.

Will it be worth running with this setup? I plan on doing some moderate off-roading and mostly city driving. Or is it what I feared, I will need to re-gear, with what gears, how much am I looking at to re-gear?

Most of the time when you get to 33s you are going to need to re-gear depending on how big of tires you had on when it was stock. I'm not sure how much it will cost.

The install cost for the new gears will be the m,ost expensive part. i am getting my new gears installed for about 300 Canadian. dont forget to include the price of new bearings and shim kits with the total cost. you wont wouldnt want to have to go back in the diff to change bearings later.

You can run the 33" tires with the 3.07 gears and 5spd, it's livable until you can afford the gear swap. You won't be able to use 5th gear much but for downhill, and passing will have to be well thought out.

Many jeepers run that setup, and I did for years until I swapped in a 350.

Keep your eyes open for used TJ axles with lower gears, either 3.73 or 4.10 will work great. The 3.73 came in 4.0L autos with the 30" tire group and the 2.5L auto. The 4.10 came stock with the 2.5l 5spd. Sometimes it's cheaper and easier to swap the entire axle out than it is to regear.

richsia, you've likely got 3.07 gears if you have a 5spd.

How did you go about getting a build sheet?
This would be a big help for me.
Thanks in advance

I went to "contact us" on the bottom of the main page at jeep.com.

from there I went to "need customer assistance."

Then, "send us an email"

Then you just fill out the page, including your VIN number and put requesting a complete build sheet. They will email you the whole thing. Took about a day to get mine.

If you do regear you have to remember about the carrier sizes. Once you go from a ratio that starts with a 3 (3.xx) to a 4 (4.xx) the carrier size changes. So if you regear from a 3.07 to a 3.73 you can use the same carrier. 3.07 to 4.11 will need a larger carrier. I went from 3.07s to 4.56s and I switched the carrier to a limited slip in back and left it open in the front. Do a search for a tire/ratio chart to get the recomended ratio for 33s. I don't have the link here at work or I would send ya there myself. Good luck.

hmmmm inteesting i didnt know u could get it on there site, i got mine months ago at the dealer.. i went in there with my VIN and they gave me a print out....

Looks like even 3.73 gears wouldnt be optimal for running 33"'s according to that chart.

Not all charts are accurate, as they don't take into account engine size and keeping different engines operating in their optimal RPM range. Same reason why I-6 and I-4 engines come factory with different gear ratios.

Best method is to figure the percentage of tire change, like increasing size my 15%. You then want to regear lower by 15%, or the same percentage you changed your tire height by.

Regear a little lower than your calculation to compensate for the added weight of the larger tires and to get a better lower crawl ratio.

I think 3.73 or 4.10 would be a good change with 33" tires with the I-6 and 5spd, when changing from 3.07 gears.

As for diff carrier sizes as mentioned above, the D30 and D35 break at different ratios. So upgrading to 3.55 would require a new D35 carrier but not the D30. Upgrading to 3.73 or lower would require new carriers for both diffs.
D30 3.54 & down / 3.73 & up
D35 3.31 & down / 3.55 & up

Recalls on my 90 YJ

Thanks for the info. Maybe Ill stick with the 3.07's for a while and if I cant take it, Ill do the switch to 3.73's. Anyone have any ideas how much it would cost a shop to switch me to 3.73 from 3.07?

-Joe

Probably close to a grand. Figure $200 per axle for parts I've heard it's $600 for labor. Go to a junk yard... find a 4-banger and steal the axles from under it. Then you'll have 4.10s.... the same as a Rubicon. Maybe you can even make a deal with the JunkYard operator... you'll give him your old axles back, for some of your money back. I really believe this is your best option.
