Just put in my throttle body spacer today and....

well.. the stock airbox is quite restrictive.. and the air that comes in gets heated up just about as much as it does with the open air filter... and with the air turbulence, it swirls around the airbox and heats up... the open air filter DOES get a lot more air.. but is exposed to water/mud too

well i refered to it as a "ram intake" b/c that is what it said when I ordered it....I noticed a good amount of difference from my stock box, but in reallity it is just an open cone .....

I used a reactive filter on the buick. It looks nice, but I have run it with no filter and it creates boost alot faster.
My post from another thread
(If I had the 4cyl. Get a turbo from a junked subaru or Audi. Audi had t3's . with the waste gate in the turbo.
Slap that sucker on there, raise your fuel pressure.)
Iam all for junk yard hp.

next to nitrous being the most bang for the buck, I would go turbo or supercharged.

Superchargers, in my opinion, are not anywhere near the most bang for the buck. For the $4-$6000+, you don't really gain that much power. They work better on engines that are already "built" to their limit, such as as boring, stroking, etc. For that much money, anyone could easily find a 454 that has as more horsepower and torque that a supercharged 2.5L has.

My $.02

I got 18mpg the other day on a 2.5hr interstate drive, running about 75mph. Remember this is with my 2.5L and stock 4.11 gears, and 32x11.5" tires. Quite an accomplishment I think considering stock gears and big tires. Best I've gotten since stock.

I've corrected my speedo, so this mileage is accurate.

I think I'll be installing my Mopar Performance camshaft next week, should be quite an improvement.

Wow, after seeing my Jeep, I can't even see how that's possible! My Jeep tops out at around 55-57 (on a flat road, on a good day), has 31" tires w/4.11 gears/2.5L, and gets around 10-12 mpg

i agree... but the creativity factor of a junkyard powered jeep is very respectable

The stock airbox has a removable restrictor in the tube connecting the box to the throttle body. Removing it and using the stock setup with a freer-breathing K&N drop-in (OEM Replacement) filter will open it up and keep the cooler intake. I sold mine before I got a chance to try the spacer. I had gotten 20 mpg regularly when on the highway when I could cruise an average of 68 mph (checked mileage and speed via GPS). That was also with the 2.5L, 4.11's, and 32x11.50's. I had basically the same setup as Bounty with an electric fan.

When I was running the factory gearing with the 36x12.50s, I think it got better mileage in the city than it did on the highway.
Bounty, what RPM do you spin your 2.5l up to? Will it smoke those 32s?

Never said buy a kit, I mean built it yourself.
Maybe get a supercharger off a buick or grand am.
I prefer a turbo.
Good luck in whatever you do.

I doubt if it would smoke 27"s ;) I generally run around 3K on the highway, and lately have been able to hold steady at 2.5K in 5th gear on the interstate, at around 70 and 75.

The Iron Duke in all her glory! Bore & stroke her and port out the heads! She'll at least smoke the 27's!

The Iron Duke was the earlier four that AMC sourced from GM.

Try this. Spin it up to 3000 and hold it, floor it and when the needle sweeps past 4000.....pop the clutch and hold the gas to the floor. That will let the RPMs drop to right at the point that it starts making power. Shift right past the peak HP RPM which I remember being around 5,500. I could spin the 36s in first and bark a mean ass second like this. SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN, just don't blame me if it's something bad.

TwistedCoppers suggestion about porting the head is a good one for a few more horses, especially after you get that longer duration camshaft. Just match the exhaust side to your header and lightly polish it, clean up the casting in the intake ports with an emory roll or small sanding drum mounted in a die grinder.

I prefer a turbo.
why would you like a turbo better? we are low end monsters... with a turbo, you have to get the engine really moving.

Bore & stroke her and port out the heads!
i have never heard of a larger crank for the 4 cyl... so stroking it is likely not an option... though boring still is

I prefer a turbo for the tuning options. Waste gates and Bov.
So if you want 5lbs of boost , set the waste gate to 5... want more just turn it up.. No pulleys to mess with, or belt routing.
IF its sized properly it will spool faster ( some 2000 rpm) That not spinning the motor too fast... With gears it would hit 2000 faster then ya think...
Oh They sound pritty cool too :)

ok i can understand the wastegate reasoning... but there is no reason an adjustable wastegate can't be installed on a centrifugal style supercharger... and you can set them up to spin at different speeds too... and it is instant.. and no waiting for everything to cool when you're glowing

i was thinking junkyard hp. You could find a roots type in the yard ... But I doudt a Centrifugal. The turbos are everywhere, And the adjustable wastegate can be made from hardware store parts....

well... you're very right there... centrifugal SC's would be gobbled up right away... and still.. i've seen roots style blowers used as standalone units, where the blower's output is connected to a pipe which runs ultimately to the throttle body... to be specific... it was a 3rd gen camaro... with a Ford Lighning supercharger mounted on each valvecover... intercooled and all...

but after all... if we're talking about scavenging parts from a junkyard to make hp.. a turbo IS the way to go... but for making horsepower and torque in general... i'm all about supercharging
