leafspring tech

i want to relocate my front spring hangers. what i want out of this is 4" lift using 3" springs. is this a bad idea? good idea? what should i look out for when doing this?

So you want to shorten the length of the springs to add more arch?

What comes to mind is ZERO articulation.

Maybe try an add-a-leaf instead???

do you mean relocate by extension? If so, you'll have to either extend them 2 inches.. or go one inch and use one inch extended shackles

You can lower the spring hanger, but the other end of the spring will need lowered the same distance to keep caster correct.

Shackle reversals are a hinderance offroad, they unload the pressure on the tires when an obstacle is encountered.

i dont want a shakle reversal.(i like when the spring compresses it moves the tire forward) i want just the hangers on the rear of the spring lowered a inch. my front drive shaft can fully compress when the suspension drops, so i think lowering the hanger will fix that. to keep the same caster without lowering the front end of the spring, i would have to cut off and relocate my spring perches right?do you think i can get away with not changing the caster?

If you lower the rear spring mounts you could obtain the same height in the front with longer shackles, but...

I can't help but to think there are much easier ways to obtain another 1" of clearance. ( bigger springs, AAL, small shackle lift, etc)

You have an aftermarket front driveshaft???

I've done that before. You're best bet is to at least fab some stronger and longer spring and shackle mounts, but you could get away with just lowering the factory shackle mounts. Spacers that use the factory mounting holes can be made easily and if you're worried about stability, you can just tie the two sides together. I didn't really like the idea of just lowering that thin stamped rear spring mount so I made new ones, but I've seen the factory ones used with spacers. Longer shackles are okay to match just a 1" lowered spring mount, but if you also lower the shackle mount you can get even more lift with those longer shackles and still not screw up your pinion angle or steering. A guy I used to work with had a J10 with 3" drops on all of the mounts and didn't have any problems with it. Just don't "booty fab" it and kill yourself:lol:

the setup i have now is 3" lift springs and 1" lift shakles. i want to junk the shakles and replace them with teraflex revolver shakles, but if i do that i will loose an inch of lift. and i really want that 4th inch without having to lift the body.

also, because the front end of my front springs are lower than stock, my factory front drive shaft will bottom out when my tire drops down too far.

i think with the back of the spring down more and the front of the spring up more, the problem will be fixed.

i can shim the front axle to adjust caster right?

also, if you guys are ever looking for some replacemant and aftermarket part,
this is the cheapest place i have found www.windrockoffroad.com

You can shim the axle to adjust caster... You say you have a 1" shackle lift. Do you have 1" extended shackles (.5" lift) or 2" extended shackles (full inch lift). If you are doing fine with a 1" shackle lift. My suggestion would be to use a 1" extended shackle and extend the spring hanger 1". That would result in a full 1" lift and keep your caster stock

my shakles give 1 1/4 inch lift, they are a little over 2 1/2 inches extended. i would like to get revolver shakles though. i think im gonna just make 1 inch droped hangers and shakle mounts.
thanks

you don't need to move the shackle mounts. It would be a lot easier just using 1" extended shackles
