looking for web-site and info on engine swap?

Anyone know of a comprehensive website on engine swaps in a CJ-7? I’m starting to gather some information for the engine swap along with transmission and transfer case.

Just starting off, I am thinking a Chevy 350 (lots and lots of aftermarket parts) with some transmission (NV3550, or maybe an automatic?) and my D300 transfer. Thoughts?

Thanks for any info you can provide. Also, has anyone bought a crate engine and could they recommend a store? (Not ebay, I would like some type of warrantee)

The absolute best deal anywhere is the Mr.Goodwrench crate engine. Available at your local Chevy dealer and I've seen them for under $1100. It makes about 260hp with the recommended headers and carb. This engine is VERY easy to upgrade for more power. A cam change and you are knocking on 300hp's door. A step up would be the 350HO crate engine from GM. It is available in three stages, makes 330-350hp, with the deluxe package including everything down to the sparkplugs and costing about $3,300. 3year/36000 mile GM warranty on both I think.

What transmission do you have? Have you considered an AMC V8? You can't beat a small block Chevy for parts availability and low cost, but you have to spend more to get it between the framerails. Hands down the dog-leg exhaust port AMC cylinder head is one of the best flowing heads produced by ANY american auto manufacturer. All of an engines ability to make power depend on the heads ability to flow. A 78 model AMC 360 with shaved factory heads and a good cam will walk all over a factory headed Chevy 350 from the same era, no matter what other NA mods you make to it. Head porting is expensive, and all the GM heads that do make good power without being reworked are either ancient($) or brand new($). If you are spending the coin to go aftermarket heads and roller cam in the 350, then you just left the AMC sitting......but if you aren't shooting for more than 400 streetable horsepower the AMC IS the better bargain, unless you are planning to swap in a Chevy transmission at the same time.

Wrong Carb

i have a SR-4 transmission behind my 258 now, and i am going to replace both. I think just for ease of wheeling, i would like to go automatic (this is also going to be my daily driver) so i am going to replace my transmission

TF999 automatic w/shift kit and a mild 360. Your Dana 300 will bolt right up to it. Factory driveshafts from the same CJ-7 that the transmission comes from. Factory mounts, radiator, no adapters......it just makes sense.

And it would still be ALL Jeep

Sorry to hear your Jeep was born with the dreaded SR-4 disease. A transplant is most definitely needed if you expect your baby to lead a normal happy life!

I got my engine (350) from rebuiltautoengines.com It was a great deal and has 7 year warranty.

home made axle disconnect

thanks bryanjeep,

i see you are using the 700r4, is that a junk yard find, or did you get it some place else?
also, i have found some places that sell a conversion package ( northern auto parts for example) are you going that route or just going to fab as you go?

I am getting the 700r4 through a local shop, they offer a core for $100 roughly. I haven't bought it yet, but I got all my adapters from www.advanceadapters.com Check it out. A lot of us here have used them for parts. 700r4's can be found anywhere if you look. Good luck.
