Loud noise / sharp jerk when shifting

Front Axle Posi-lock - any experience?

Howdy all

I have noticed a large noise/sharp pull when I shift into drive (this only seems to happen when I dont have my foot on the brake and shift from P/R to D). I think its a U Joint but after the radiator stuff earlier in the month I figure I better post b/fore I start tearing into it. Y'all are appreciated

does it do it in reverse also? how about when you step on the gas? more info would be good...

If you think its an U-Joint, crawl under to test it.
Using BOTH hands, try rotating the driveshaft in the front and rear. If it has too much play or clunks, its a bad u-joint. If not, its something else.

Could be a lot of things. Torque converter, transmission mounts, gears, brakes, etc etc etc.... Need more info.

No when I step on the gas and at high speeds seems good, no noise, no sharp pop or noise when I hit reverse, just drive. Icy I will give it a try thank you. Will let y'all know.

OK here's the deal when shifting from P to D or R to D 9 out of 10 times there's a loud clank or pop seems to be coming from the back of the transmission where the Driveshaft comes out

any tips are appreciated

Set the e-brake. Have someone shift the trans while you look under the jeep. Pinpoint the noise. Also check for broken trans mount and broken motor mounts. Watch the driveshaft while shifting. If it is jumping around alot you might check the rearend.

Had a buddy come over to diagnose. The drive shaft doesnt jump at all, the u joints are tight and the noise is definitely coming from the rear of the transmission and not the rear end which was my first thought

theres full fluid in both the rear diff and the transmission and the rear diff seems ok I may change the fluid any way (no telling how long its been) I will check for the broken transmission and motor mounts next

there also seems to be a clicking and high pitched squeak when the vehicle is cold and I'm driving at low speeds coming from about the same location--I'm thinking that there might be a bearing in the rear of the transmission going out --any thoughts

I am begining to think the transmission is the prob

Allright here's the deal my transmission mount is jelly, its goo on the front 1/2 when you touch it. The rest of the rubber part is all cracked and hard and crumbly. I am definitely replacing that. Here's my concern though, I am hearing that noise when I accelerate and I am getting a terrible vibration now through the center console at freeway speeds. I believe this is consistent with transmission mount failure, however, if anyone has any other experience like this or can tell me some more tips I would appreciate it. What I am worried about is a torque converter or the like also being broken.

Thanks y;all

The transmission mount replacement was a successfull. However I am still getting that knock/ slap sound when putting it in gear and when on the freeway. In fact it seems that the noise is definitely coming from the rear differential. I am thinking the gears in there have slipped and the clunk/slap noise is generated when shifting into gear / acceleration. Also its loud in the back of the cab when driving, I know from my old chevy van that's indicator the rear gears are goin. I changed the gear oil today, to see if that'd slow the wearing down. I would appreciate any commentary on whether or not y'all think my diagnosis is correct and tips on what to replace, availability of parts etc.

My plan is to price new set of gears--any experience on this???
or to find a rear diff in good shape at this Jeep yard near my house and just do a swap --again any experienced commentary on this dillemma is appreciated

Y'all have a great weekend!

know y'all are busy but sure could use some more experienced guidance on this problemo bf/ore I tear into. I ordered my rear diff kit today, gonna price gears from the bone yard unless y'all know where I can get a good set of replacements.

That sounds somewhat similar to a probelm that I had with my 83 CJ7 and it was the two piece axles. I had the pop sound when letting out on the clutch, but I also had it on deceleration as well. I had no driveline vibrations at speed though. I am not sure what Jeep you have or if it has two piece axles or not. My solution was to replace the axles with Superior one piece axles and I have not had a problem since.

Deerhunter I just realized I had not posted the type of vehicle I have, its a 91 cherokee pioneer (xj)? 4x4 w/212k--everything on her's tight or getting fixed but this problem has either been there all along and I didnt notice or gotten significantly worse over the last month

any suggestions on where to find those axles I just called the bone yard in ATX here and priced a rear end at $500, I laughed and told the dude I already have a junk one, I'm not gonna pay that much bling for one that I dont even know works

That sounds like a U joint going up.

No doubt, that's what the gang on NAJXA thought also,
I think that I will go ahead and change the Ujoints b/c at 210k its already on my list of Preventative maintenance steps (and its cheap to fix), however the fact that the joints are tight and they dont PING made me think perhaps the prob is the diff. Listening for a PING noise from a worn Ujoint could be relying too heavily on my GM experience, when a GM Ujoint wears you'll hear a very characteristic pinging when shifting b/fore it goes, and this is my 1st jeep.
thanks yall

last nite pulled off the driveshaft replaced my u joints and the jeep sounds much better. she may be all fixed for now, I dont get the slap/pop noise anymore while driving or shifting (although I heard it once after I installed the driveshaft--I'll keep an eye onthat)

thanks for all y'alls help
