Master/Slave Cylinders (clutch) problems on older Pioneer

I just had the third cylinder job in about 4 years done on my '88 Cherokee Pioneer; inline 6 and 5 sp manual. 179k miles.

I have a reliable, honest mechanic who I have used over 10 years, he told me the last time we went thru this the parts store he buys from will not guarantee the cylinders when used on these trucks as there is a typical floorboard deformity after many miles causing the cylinders to wear out prematurely.

After a while the clutch fluid starts turning silvery and silty the pedal and freeplay get soft and I know it is a matter of weeks till I will either have to bring the truck in or risk getting stranded clutcless.

The master going bad and the silty fluid usually "infects" the slave which is a real pain cause some genius at Pugeot decided the slave should go inside the bell housing.

He commented that the master he was sent this this time was made of steel as opposed to the previous ones which were made of aluminum so that sounds good.

Anybody else ever heard of this? Any ideas?

The slave cylinder problem with the Jeep, is pretty much through all models and for a number of years. I get the feeling it´s an engineering problem or cheap materials. The DOT 3 fluid called for in the clutch cylinders, I´ve looked at, seems like a poor choice. DOT 3,4and5 are designed for high temp. and are corrosive and some are water magnets. I think the next time I change mine out, I´m going to put a normal high quality hydrolic jack oil in there. It´s also possible that, there is an electrolis problem also, galvinized parts that come in contact with aluminum, often cause the aluminum to break down, but this takes years. Most cars, are negatively charged, which aggrivates the problem some.[addsig]

Mudder please post and let us know how the different oil works out if you do this.

So far so good with not having to replace the slave, have driven a few hundred miles and seems ok. Knock on wood.

Thanks
