This all depends on the year/model of your jeep....

Yes, that is all correct fluids. I highly suggest spending the extra $ and use the synthetic version of 75w-90 GL-5.

Coincidentally, I also have 89 YJ 2.5L AX-5 NP231. Is your's Black like mine?

yep mine is black.so the mecon dexton III is the right one for the t-case?[addsig]

Yeah. Basically, it's automatic transmission fluid in the t-case. That's cool that we have the near exact same Jeep: Black 89 YJ 2.5L AX-5. Do you have any lift? You can check mine out at my website.

Hey Hi C, I checked out your website and noticed you have a Cargo Master Congo Cage. I'm thinking about getting one myself. Just wondering how you like it and if you have the steel or aluminum one. I don't know for sure if I'll be getting it because I will have to modify the frame. My snorkel is in the way. Thinking about cutting the frame that holds the cage up on the drivers side and welding it about 2-3 inches to the right so it won't hit my snorkel.[addsig]

Don't use that gear oil in your transmission, anything rated GL5 and most GL4's have a very high sulfer content, which is very corrosive to the soft brass synchronizers of the Aisin/Warner AX5 and AX15 trannies.

Use Redline MT90 or Penzoil Synchromesh, both which are specially formulated to be easy on the synchros. Your shifting will improve and your transmission will thank you  [addsig]

i'm with that... i found out the hard way... and its SURELY not worth waiting to change it... get to it right away[addsig]

Bounty,
The manual says to use 75w-90w GL-5 rated gear oil. I use the synthetic version of this and now shifting is like a warm knife through butter. Have you seen these results first hand?

Craig,

I love my congo cage. But it only comes in steel. The baskets that go on top can be either steel or aluminum. I don't have a basket. I just got it to hold my surfboard. I bought some yakima bars to mount to it so that I can put my mtn.bike up there soon. I'll keep you posted.

Mandarrin,

That's cool that you have a shackle lift, too. We have almost the exact same setup. I have 30 inch tires... what about you? As far as a soft top goes... I found all the stock hardware off a jeep in a junkyard and then bought the Bestop Replay top (which is the stock cloth and windows). The hardware from the Junkyard was $35 and the replay top was $290. So I got lucky. I'd suggest getting a brand new factory like top from Bestop. I have a coupon for 10% all softtops from Bestop if you want to use it. It's good through the end of the year. I know 10% ain't much, but for a $500 top that's $50 off. Let me know. I'll help a brutha out. yo.

i already bough the 75w 90w do you thing it well damage my transmission?

hi c, i think i could use the cupon when i get ready to buy the top though.i'll probably get the harware from a junyard too.i'm running 31"[addsig]

Bounty has the right idea, I have been using redline for a few years in all of my vehicles gear boxes with wonderful results, redline MTL has worked wonders for the XJ as well as my miata which has a great shifting transmission but wow what a difference the MTL made. I also checked transmission temps before and after the switch (in the miata) using a fluke 51 digital pyrometer and the difference in case temp after the same 20 mile HARD drive was 31F.. pretty good I think. Also being an engineer and studying oils and lubrication I can tell you with certainty that there is no comparing dino juice to syn oils..

Mandarrin,
As far as damage to your transmission, I cant say. All I know is that my manual says that the 75w-90w GL-5 is the standard fluid to use in the AX-5 transmission. And the Mecron Dexton stuff (auto transmission fluid) is what the same manual recommends for the t-case. Bounty might know more about what's best, but I'm just re-stating the manual's direction.

Just let me know if you want that coupon. I think it's got some code on it so you don't actually have to have the physical card.

Redline or Synromesh are the way to go. Make your transmission very happy. No more cold stiffness in the winter. Very good stuff. Tug[addsig]

Yes, I've seen the results firsthand, and changed many an AX5 because of it. The owner's manuals are in error, yet DC will do nothing about it to replace the thousands of bad transmissions.

This info has been out on the web for over a year, but looks like it still needs to be spread. Tell everyone with an Aisin Warner AX5 or AX15 so they can change out the transmission fluid before it's too late.

Do a google search on things like "GL5 synchronizer", "corrosive synchronizer", etc, and you will find a lot of information. I use Redline MT90, but MTL is rated for slightly colder climates I believe. I've heard great things about GM Synchromesh, the bottle says it's rated for Chrysler products and is easy on soft brass. I put it in the last AX5 swap I did for a buddy.[addsig]

Wow :-O Ok, now I'm kicking myself in the butt. I just spent $20 on synthetic GL-5 and now I'm gonna go out and spend another $20 on this synchromesh stuff. Well, I guess it's better than $1500 for a new transmission. Thanks, Bounty.

yup, bounty is right... the manual is WRONG... and it IS poopy that they won't take on the responsibility of their error, but i guess its not so bad, if you know about it that is.... yeah, go get some penn SM... or order some redline... you'll be happy... keep your wallet safe[addsig]
