Is it safe to mount tow hooks on the flat crossmember that is welded to the frame rail (this is the piece that is covered by the "JEEP" frame cover) or must I go directly into the frame rail?[addsig]

When mounting towhooks or points, it's ALWAYS a good idea to go to the frame of the vehicle. I've seen to many people hurt, and to many bent bumpers to let someone do something that will be regretted later. My advice is to do it right the first time, and mount the hooks right to the frame. In TJ's the hooks are mounted right through the flat cover AND the frame rails.

On My YJ I mounted the tow Hooks right on top of the frame cover you are speaking of. I really torqued it down though. Just think of the thin plastic as a washer I guess. If I have made a grave error please let me know. thanks tug[addsig]

alrighty then...if my plan is to use the upper mounting bolt for the bumper (that goes to frame) for the front towhook bolt and drill the rear hole, should I place a washer above the frame cover to level the hooks? Also, this will mean the tow hooks will stick out in front of the Jeep an inch or two - arriving everywhere just before the truck does =)

I have a YJ and have spent zero time around a TJ so I cant help you. I was able to use the three hole hooks and mounted up witht e stock two bolts on top of the frame nice and flush. Tug[addsig]

Are you talking YJ or TJ?

Most Jeepers just use the factory top hole for the bumper mount and get a longer grade 8 bolt to hold the hook. On YJ's there is a second threaded hole already in the frame just behind the bumper mount, it's were factory tow hooks were mounted when that was an option.

I cut a notch in my plastic frame cover that goes around the tow hook. Use a washer for the back bolt to compensate for the thickness of the bumper.[addsig]

I bought a set of hooks for my yj and the hole pattern was too short to match the factory-threaded holes in the frame. There are sellers of hooks that match the factory frame threaded holes. Buy those.

As for the hooks in the frame. Under no circumstances should anything you expect to hold and not do damage be bolted to anything else than the frame. Including tow rigs.

Serious injury. Not to mention the damage to your toy.

Anyone need a set of hooks that won’t fit the factory holes?
