Need an engine... advice please!!!

Sorry for the long post, but I need some help!

Ok... so it's been determined... my CJ is dead :( ... well, the engine needs rebuilt at least.

So, now I have a early winter project and I'll have a fresh engine and will be ready to go for next year.

My question for everyone is: Should I rebuild, or buy a remanufactured engine, or maybe buy a 4.0 FI and swap in? I have ~$1200 to put into it, but of course want to get out as cheap as possible (and still have a good engine).

So what's your advice? Also, if you have any websites or companies I should look towards for parts, let me know.

I guess the lift and tires will have to wait... you save up money, and something will always come up that you have to spend it on... sigh :?

Thanks for your help!

Try Jasper! For the money there is not a better rebuilt engin on the market in my book. tug

what type of engine do you have, and do you have the space, time, and tools to rebuild

if you do, I would do it yourself - not necessarily because of the price, but because you get and intimate working knowledge of your ride

It's an 82 CJ7 with a 258. My biggest problem right now is the space and time for a rebuild, so I might let someone else rebuild it (haven't decided yet).

I have thought about Jasper because of all the good things I have read about them, but it would definitly be cheaper to rebuild. I guess I have time to decide.

Any more suggestions (or opinions), let 'em fly.

well if your going to spend the money to get someone to rebuild it just order one from jasper. they warrantee there stuff for like 3 years and its deffinatly worth it. i have a jasper trans in my TJ now and it runs great.

I´ve taken a few 4.2´s apart, maybe I just over do things. But the crank always seemed pretty scored, machining or replacement crank? Standard bearing or oddball main bearings (have to buy 2 or 3 sets, sometimes). Cylinder walls were seriously cone shaped. Motor dip/wash and over boring. Probably a quality rebuild, could be cheaper in the long run.

I agree order a rebuilt motor. Way worth the extra money in saved time, hassle, and someone else to shoulder it if it fails. (Don't ask how I know that last example  )

I don't remeber where I found it but I found an extra long block which has everything but the valve cover and Oil pan for around $700. I just did a search on the web. I do not know if it was a good company or not but I saw several in that price range.
