Need quick advice for Lift-Tires

Hello all,

Well something really incredible just happened. I was put in touch with someone who wants to make a tire swap. This girl purchased a 92 YJ with a 5" lift and some 33's on it. She hates the big tires and wants to swap for smaller tires. Since I have stock rims with slightly larger than stock A/T tires on my 91 YJ I quickly agreed to do the swap, since I haven't been able to afford rims and larger tires yet. Ok so below are the details of the tires I'll be getting.

My rims are Spirit of America I am not exactly sure how to find the
size I really don't know much about tires so let me see if this is right
Tires:
front 2 tires are Mastercraft Courser A/T 33x12.5OR15LT
2 back+ 1 spare are BF Goodrich Baja Champion All terrain A/T
33x12.5OR15LT

I'm not sure about the rim description, I've put a picture up on my website for you to check out. I'm not exactly sure what these rims are. Click on the photos tab on the left and go to the bottom of the page.

Ok, so here's the advice I need. I know I'm gonna need a lift. I don't have a whole hell of a lot of money and she wants to get this swap done ASAP so I'm probably gonna have to get a shop to do the lift for me. My jeep is a 91 YJ with the 4 banger in it and it is totally stock (for now!!!!). So what is my best choice for this setup? I'm talkin' bare minimum at this point. In the future I may go more elaborate, but for now I just want to make sure the tires will go on my jeep.

And I apologize profusely because I know this kind of info has been discussed in this forum, but I'm too excited right now to sort through all the posts. So thanks for all of your help in advance.

Cheers,
Geoff

The guy who may have just scored deal of a lifetime on rims and tires!!
Also, I'm in Los Angeles and any advice from the locals here on where to go to put the lift on would be great !!

Re: winch

I've got a '93 and I'm lookin' at a 3 1/2" susp. lift and a 1" puck lift. There's always the issue with re-gearing, but that's for another day.

That is a deal of a lifetime!Nice score!
If you want to do it right the first time around and not later.I say go with a 4 inch suspension lift. The suspension kit is more expensive, but definitely worth it.Or if you plan on going back later and just making the tires fit.You should probably get an add-a-leaf and at least a 1 inch body lift and maybe some flare trimming if you want a little more room..They will fit,but it will be tight. As long is you dont disconnect offroad you should be fine.

Dont forget about re-gearing!4.56 or even 4.88 would be about right.

PS -
Whatever you do dont go to 4wheelparts!

power is gonna be a big factor for you.... GREAT DEAL by the way.... you're gonna have to look into reagearing, or some major attention to engine mods.... but... it can be done... you're gonna wany about 4+ inches of lift total.... whether suspension, or a combination of suspension/body/shackle...

I'm with snitty, that 4 banger is going to have a hard time pushing those 33s... you could get away with it for a while but your power will be lacking. Congrats on the trade!

So that girl is going to have close to stock tires with a 5" lift? ouch!

You definitely need a 4" suspension lift. I purchased my 4" lift kit from www.hellcreeksuspensions.com for $389. This kit is a true 4" lift as opposed to the "Rough Country" lift which is 3". The reason it's different is because the owner of Hell Creek also owns his own spring manufacturing company and he includes his own 4" springs and takes out the 3" springs from the kit. I stand behind this kit. Go to my website to see what the kit looks like installed on a YJ. Also, I had 5 guys from my Jeep club come over one saturday morning and we completed the install in 4 hours. That includes torch-cutting, running out to buy a new tie rod end and running to lowe's for some extra bolts. Save some real $$ and do the kit yourself. Find a local jeeper who's done a lift on a YJ before and it will go a lot smoother. PM me if you have questions.

Put on the lift and tires (4" lift would be perfect) Don't worry about re-gearing, just forget that 5th gear exhists,(4th will also be a distant memory) and try to not cry when the 85 yr old woman in the 78 dodge aspen passes you on the highway.

Once this has been experienced, get some 4.56:1 gears and drive happy!

jps, don't be so hard on the guy. You can do other things to maintain 4th gear. I have the 4 cylinder with 33" bfg m/t and I still have power in 4th. I installed the K&N and a Dynomax muffler to help breathe. I also went with 33x10.50 which are skinnier and provide less wind-resistance and are lighter. I have TJ alloys, which are also lighter. My next power mod will be an electric fan. 5th gear still holds about 65 on flat highway, but that's all the faster I can go (and up-hill is a 4th or even 3rd gear requirement). Generally, if I'm taking the Jeep, I'm not in a hurry anyway. So just enjoy the slowdown... you'll have more time to notice people checking out your rig. Sure 4.56 would be nice, but who's got the money to regear? I'd rather dump that $ into a pair of lockers.

4" would be the max I would go without an sye or cv shaft. Any more than that would be asking for it. Though I have heard of people doing spring-overs with the stock shaft and slip yoke. I say stick with stock, save yourself $525.

Many many thanks to all who quickly let me know exactly what I am getting into. My feeling from the responses is that to do this right (and I usually try to), is gonna take time and $$ which I don't have alot of right now. So this is what I'm thinkin...Still gonna trade (who the hell would pass this up!!), but instead of putting the 33's on, use the nice rims and put some 31's on my stock YJ, grab a 1" body lift for a little extra space.

I'll hold on to the 33's until I can 1. Lift my jeep properly (and myself hopefully) 2. Regear 3. Maybe drop in a 6 cyl engine for the additional power. Or who knows, I may end up selling the 33's if I like the rims with the 31's. Either way I'm ahead of the game on this tire swap.

Thanks again and let me know what you guys think about the above.

Wrangler reliabilty

i just lifted my Jeep YJ this past christmas break - 3-inch body and 1-1/4inch shackles, it only cost me about $100 for the body lift; $150 for the shocks; and $100 for the shackles; did it myself and saved $300 and 33's will clear with ease- which im getting soon 8)

Extreme, I have to disagree with you. I have to be frank, you spent $350 on a 4" lift and really didn't gain any ground clearance. Sure, you can fit 33's now, but you're very limited. There are many 3" - 4" suspension lift kits out there that include shocks, pitman arm, t-case drop, for under $400. The install is relatively easy (depending on the condition of your Jeep) and can be completed in a day.

I have to agree with hi_c.A supension lift gives you more clearance and doesnt leave gaps between your frame and your body.I just hate gaps!

Ok... here comes another gearing question. (sorry) '91 YJ, 4.0L, 3.5" suspension lift, 32x11.5's................. what would help my gas milage and make me feel as fast as a '93 Mercury Tracer again? thanks. jered.

a my friend is running 4" coil 3" bl and a 2" spacer w/ only a sye...
