New Jeeper

testtttt

Hi Guys! So happy to be part of the Jeep family. Great forum. I’m learning a lot from it. I now own a 2.5L 94 YJ. It’s stock… for now. I already changed the air filter with a K&N and have to replace the manifold and the muffler. I am trying to get a little power from that 4banger before I switch to bigger tires. The catalytic converter was replaced about a year ago. Can I keep the cat and replace everything else or should I go with an all new exhaust system. Banks seems to be my only choice for the header! Any suggestion on what to use with the Banks manifold? I want to learn and do most of the work myself. Is this something I could do? I did oil change, replaced starter and radiator in the past? Thanks for your help. Tino :D

motorcraft carb help

Welcome to jeepz, you'll love it here, it's a great bunch.

Why do you need to replace the stock exhaust manifold?

I'd keep the converter and replace everything else. My current exhaust is just a turndown behind the muffler, went simple this time to see how I like it.

My jeep's a '95 YJ 2.5L and I've done a lot of power mods to it. I think it drives pretty well, considering I run heavy 32" and 33" swampers with stock axle gearing.

There's a good forum dedicated to the Jeep 4banger owners here: 4Bangers United It has lots of experienced and helpful 4Banger owners.

Motorcraft carb and adapter for cheap

I red in a jeep magazine that they tend to crack around 50K. I have 54K on mine. I also have a little problem over 3500rpm (lost of power and sputtering). I’m about to removed the tank and make sure that everything is clean inside. I already replaced the gas filter and pour a bottle of injection system cleaner in the gas tank. I replaced the CCV valve and the tube. The tube was cracked and was causing an air leak. The spark plugs and spark plug wires are new too. I was thinking that the problem could be from a crack in the manifold. How obvious that would be? :?:

RE: Clutch or Transmission?

That's the 4.0L 6 cyl.'s manifold that's known for cracking, not the 2.5.

I got good results from an electric fan conversion, you may want to consider it for a little more power.

The 2.5L manifold is not probe to cracking like the 4.0L exhaust manifold. It wouldn't cause your poor mileage if it was, just be noisy, ticking a lot. They are prone to breaking the forwardmost and rearmost exhaust manifold studs.

RE: Clutch or Transmission?

So do you think that will be a waist of money to replace my old rusty manifold. The jeep is originally from Connecticut, so I'm trying to replaced all the rusty parts. You don't think I would get a little more power out of a Banks? What about throttle body spacer? Could I do that? :?

RE: Electronic disconnecting front antiroll bar. I want one

doing a cat-back upgrade to open up the exhaust will be a good upgrade combined with opening up the intake airflow.

Did you use a drop-in K&N or a cone? If you used the drop-in, you can also remove a factory airflow restrictor inside the tube from the air filter box to the intake. If you used a cone type, the restictor is already gone.

Spacers are open for debate, but I have no opinion on them. You can upgrade to a 4.0L throttle body though (Junkyard?)

I used the drop-in one. I will look for that factory airflow restrictor. thanks.

Evolution captured at the Nativity?!?

Welcome aboard! I've got the '94 2.5L also and love it!!!! You can't go wrong with a YJ! All I've done for power is pull that stupid restrictor out, and yeah, it made a big difference in both power and mileage. I'm getting 20mpg with 31's now.

Got any pics of your Jeep?

Why is Banks your only choice for a header?

Just like any engine, you want to increase airflow in and out of the engine and utilize that extra airflow as efficiently as possible to increase power. That engine will NEVER produce decent low-end torque, so forget it and make changes to increase top-end breathing....then regear the axles to let the engine operate where it makes the best power. Ditch the airbox and go to a free flowing cone or other open element filter. A bigger throttle body and you can use a spacer.....just don't fall for the Helix crap, buy the cheapest one you can find that fits your TB the best and port match it to your intake. Thick flanges are the best feature to look for in a header, if you aren't too concerned with tubing diameter. Ditch the cat if you can and run a mandrel bent pipe back to a free flowing(cheap 2.25" "turbo" is good enough) muffler and tailpipe. That would be a good start.

RE: airflow restrictor link

I put a Banks cat back and head pipe on my YJ, along with a high flow cat. I will never need to replace it again. A header would help, i think headers help any engine... But if it aint broke, don't fix it. My 4.0 header is shot... its gettin a Banks replacement, eventually. They put out quality stuff in my opinion.

Thanks TC for the link. It only took me 5min to removed that restrictor thing and it work so much better...I think...Let me test drive my jeep again...2 hours later (It's beautiful in Florida at this time of the year)....definitely better.

RE: Some custom work for ya...

Yes, I did. Very helpful. Thanks Bounty. There are a lot of new terms and abbreviations for me since I started doing research for this Jeep; BL, BT... You should see my desk. I have notes everywhere. I wish I was that devoted at school years ago!!! I think I understand everything but I might ask some dumb questions here and there. I promise to ask them only once!!!! There’s one. Is the “cat-back” another term for muffler?

RE: Re: RE: what size can I run?

Thanks everyone for the warming welcome. It's like being on the road and be waved by other Jeepers. Sorry, I don't have any pics. I hope Santa will bring me a digital camera for x-mas so I can show it to you.

Hey, this is one I think I can answer for you!!! "cat-back" = everything from the "cat" (catalytic converter) on "back" (including the muffler)! Welcome and a big Jeepz wave!
