New Project Ideas

Ok I've been having the urge to get a project car. I think I'm back to wanting a 95ish XJ, 5spd, sport. I have a few questions about what I will need for the project so it won't tear apart on me. My goal is to have 35's, snorkle, custom bumpers, exhuast, and maybe a few other things. My main question is what type of axles will I need to turn the 35's, and what size lift will I need to give the 35's pretty good flex? I've seen a few rigs have a 6-9in lift with 35's but wasn't sure if that's what I'll need. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Also does anyone have pictures of what the jeep will look like with those size tires and different lifts? Thanks

what axle you need depends on what you'll be doing with it. you'll obviously have to regear them.

Well I'll be doing mud, water, hills, and possibly Tellico. I don't know much about axles and gears so I don't know what gears I would need. Will I be able to use the stock axles (either danas or the chryslers). I don't want any gears too extreme so that I won't be able to use it as a daily driver.

you probably would be able to use stock axles, but i would suggest upgrading to a set of dana 44's. As for gears, if you plan or running 35's i would go with 4:10's that would bring you pretty close to a stock ratio again.

Will it be easy to put lockers or limited slip on 4:10's? I've always wanted to be able to keep driving up a hill with only 2 or 3 wheels on the ground. I haven't been able to do that yet with omni-trac.

Ok so I just need to change the gears out of the stock axles if their dana or chrysler, or do I need to find new axles? Will it be easy to put full or limited slip lockers on the 4:10 gears? Also will a 6-8in lift be enough for 35's to flex or do I need more?

i can help you a little.i own a 95 xj 4.0 8'' long arm lift old style q78 buckshot mudder which are equivelent to a 35 36'' tire.i had to trim the front of my fenders just a little at the bottem of the fender 3to4'' up from the bottemof the front part.i can flex the $h!t out of mine and no problem.as far as gears i run 488.now i dont drive my jeep every day and not very fast eithr.it is a 4x4 not a cadilac.i like to drive kinda slow any way so every body can look at it.yes i am proud of my jeep.you might go with some 456 or 410s if you run 35s and ride the highways allot.

also my xj had the front high pinion dana 30 and the dana 35 in the rear.if you play as hard as i do they wont last even if you leave the cariers open.very week axles and uni joints.

If you get a late 80s early 90s xj some of them came with a D44 rear... then your half way there. 4.56 ratio will bring you back to stock with 35s... 4.88 would be more torquey.
