New to Jeepz

Hi, my name is Jason but must call me Wally. I live in Columbus, Ohio. I am 16 and have been wanting a jeep for a long time. In the last year or so I have wanted one even more ever since one of my friends got one and put a lift and 33's on it. I have been reading alot about Jeeps for awhile now and have decided that I really do want to get one, I just have a few questions. I really want a Cj or a Yj, any year is fine with me. I am looking to buy one that is very inexpensive but since alot of people off road around here it is hard to find. I want to put hopefully a 4" lift and I haven’t decided what size tires. I will probably be off roading a couple weekends a month but it will not be to hard core. One of my main questions is would it be easier/ cheaper to buy an old jeep for cheep that needs a good amount of work or should I buy one for more money that only needs some minor work? My dad and I can do almost all of the work by our self’s and bring in friends if we need so that isn’t a problem. Another Question I have is either way do any of you know where I should be looking for cheep Jeeps?
Thanks in advanced for your time and help.

Welcome aboard, Wally!! I'm probably older than your dad, but the Jeep bug struck, too, at 16...........I just waited way, way too long to answer the call. In an attempt to answer your questions, I'll just say that "cheap" and "Jeep" usually don't appear in the same sentence (I believe they call that an oxymoron). Since you've got your dad to help you, I'd just look for something good and solid (very little rust on body and frame) and build from there - then, at least, you know what you've got. Jeeps are the most versatile vehicles I know of. Just remember what Jeep stands for - Just Empty Every Pocket. Above all else, have fun...................and WAVE!!!!!

the cheap and jeep in that same sentance is VERY TRUE .... me and my wife had been wanting one for along time i'd wanted one since i was about 18 and my buddy landed a Sport... i wanted something that was going to behave well on road despite mods and also take me where i wanted to go off-road ...i knew i wanted a TJ basically because i like the way they ride so much smoother than solid leaf springs IMO i'm sure somebody will disagree with me haha so we shopped around until we found one that fit our budget and also one that wasnt racked up with miles even though the 4.0 is very durable some of the 4 bangers are too from what i've heard i wanted to spend less time wrenching on fixing and more time bolt'n up new stuff .... the best place to start is with your budget know how much you can spend and work from there with a model/choice that you like .... good luck and WELCOME !

Welcome to the club. I bought my first Jeep when I was 17. 1980 cj-7. If I were you I would look for a 1993-94 Wrangler. They held up good through the years. Lift kits are cheap and easy to install. Fuel injection. Enormous amount of after market products that actually fit together with each other. Thiers a ton of them out thier that a bunch on yuppies were drivin and never went off road.

The 91 through 95 Wranglers are all fuel injected. The only real benefit of sticking with the 94 or 95 would be the external clutch slave cylinder. If the older ones go bad they are inside the transmission, and are much more laborous to replace. Of course, if you get an automatic then that's not a factor ;)

No, Ill be getting a stick. I learned on a manual and like driving them more than automatic. I like feeling the power i guess. thanks again for all the help!

I wouldn't let getting a manual transmission keep you from a good deal on the earlier EFI YJ's, but the external slave could save you some $$$ or time someday so that's something to shoot for. My 92 never gave me a problem.
