no gas

I have a little problem with either the gas pump or an electrical connection. The gas doesn’t reach the motor neither the fuel filter. I disconnected the fuel filter and turn on the key to see if some gas would come out, but nothing. It started few months ago. I had to turn the key several time to start the engine and was able to turned it off and restart right away w/o problem. I also had a problem with the battery cable going to the negative post. The connection was bad because of corrosion and the pump was not getting power all the time. I thaw it was the problem because after cleaning the corrosion, it stop sputtering but was still a little hard to start cold. How come I am loosing pressure in the gas line if the jeep seats for few days. Is there a way to test the pump? The access to the electrical there is pretty tight. Thank you for your help

It's common for the rubber fuel line inside the tank attached to the fuel pump to blow out, causing low fuel pressure and poor performance. I'd pull it out and give it a once over closely.

Similar to what happened to me a while back, only mine had split just outside the tank and was leaking. I replaced all the lines back there, as well as the fuel pump, since I had the tank down already. I didn't check the line inside the tank, as I had already found the culprit.

Should I hear the pump running even if the line is bad? How obvious can you hear the pump and will it run until I turn the key off?

you should be able to hear the pump running with the key on and the motor not running. my tj was pretty loud, I could hear it from the drivers seat.

Is there a way to test the pump w/o having to drop the tank? I would like to aliminate the possibility of a bad wire between the battery and the pump, so I'm thinking of some way to connect the battery right to the pump. Could I do that?

did you check the fuse for the fuel pump? the pump might work but maybe the pickup tube inside the fuel tank has fallen off. I would NOT hook a battery to it if its a in tank pump. I think most of those pumps are low voltage and positive ground. you put juice to that and ignite the fumes and you can kiss you jeep good bye! if you turn the key on and stick your ear on the bottom of the tank you should be able to hear the pump.

I just spent 600 dollars fixing that sort of problem on my 91 Yj 4.0 by replacing the fuel pump assy and the fuel tank that cracked as soon as I took it off the Jeep. Since then my Jeep starts with no problems. By the way the 91 model of gas tanks can only be purchased at the Jeep dealer, one of the odd years I suppose!

The fuse is good. If I disconnect the power at the tank and hookup a voltage meter, what should be the reading comming from the battery? Should it be 12volts?

Little update. So after dropping the tank to the ground and replacing the pump, the rubber tube and the fuel filter, the problem was still there. I took the Jeep to two garages to have it check. The first one told me it was probably the main computer. I decide to take it to the dealer to find out what was really going on. After replacing the coil and five days at the shop, they put back the old coil and came out to the conclusion that the main computer was going bad. I know I could have rebuilt the old one but I decide to get a new one. They only charge me 1hr of labor ($91) plus the part ($478 ). OUTCH!!!! Hey… now its fix and I can finally drive my Jeep. I also replaced the tank skid plate since I was already working there. I also find out that when you turn the key, the pump only work for about 3 seconds.

Tino,

The pump will only work until it pressurizes the fuel system to the set pressure. By the way (I know it's too late and not your case any more, but maybe it is helpful to others reading) you CAN do a volume test on your pump. I'll have to check my manuals for volume and fill speed, but you can set a test p to fill some measure in an amount of time. If your pump cannot reach the volume in the amount of time, your pump is running bad. This is not a sure way to say the pump is running badly, as sometimes they start acting up after runing for some time (ie. after they get hot).
