My gal leaves the ac, radio, wiper, etc in the on position when she shuts down her 1993 6 cyl/5 speed wrangler. I plead with her to turn them off prior to stopping the engine for two reasons. I usually have the Indy 500 in my bvd's with skid marks due to the sudden shock of being hit with a 100 watt stereo half pegged and I believe it adds an strain when starting to supply these accessories power. Am I being too hard on the gal or is this a good practice to get into. Thanks, Frank[addsig]

I normally kill all the electronics prior to shutdown, too. Something just taught to me as a kid. [addsig]

i just cut it all off with the key... i like scaring people when they get in[addsig]

I make sure and turn everything off BEFORE turning off the ignition switch. With all accesories on, as much as 100 amps can be going through that switch. I see no reason to speed up the wearing out of the contacts due to arcing.

i turn everything off, it might just be an urban legend but i thought that it wasn't good for the a/c compressor to turn it off by the key alone[addsig]

i've got much of my stuff hooked through relays anyway... it is much cheaper and easier to replace relays than it is to replace a switch

The amount of volume that the stereo puts out will not draw more "power" unless you have a bunch of amps and other equiptment. reguardless-
As for all the other things.
As long as your charging system is in tip top shape, leaving these things on will not effect the starting capabilities. When you turn the key to the run position (not start), the constant signal is supplied to two other electrical leads, the ignition (jeeps have 2 wires) and the accessory (jeeps also have two of these) What you turn the key from run to the start potition, the power that goes to the two accessory wires changes and is sent to the starter. when the jeep starts and the key is returned to the run position, the power is then returned from the started to the accessory.

For example, next time you start your vehicle, turn the radio and wipers on, let it sit in the run position for a couple seconds so all is working, then start the jeep. The wipers will stop and the radio turns off for a brief moment.

On older carborated cars that had a factory high compression. Those vehicles are a bit different. All the electrical power would be need to turn over the high compression engine and did not posses the system I previously mentioned.

Useless knowledge but just so ya know

In most cases, the ignition retards during cranking to help reduce strain on the starter.[addsig]

Hey Frank good or bad i find it not a good idea to fuss at my lady over the little stuff. Life is to short and if you pick to much over silly stuff the relationship will be even shorter. Pick you battles and believe me this one is not worth fighting cause if it is Her jeep and Her way of doing stuff leave Her alone. Now when she drives your jeep and does this then it becomes a problem. Women with jeeps are to cool to school! hehehe just be glad you got a jeep gal. Tug[addsig]

Yanno this is a funny topic. My ex used to get on me so bad about this little thing too. I NEVER did it before and thought it a retarded issue to fuss over.

Well, now that I have my new JEEP, I find myself doing it all the time. LMAO

Funny how things change in life huh? Not sure though, which way is really better........... :-O [addsig]

Kind of a left over from the old days. When starting the engine ,with the accessories on, the accesorries are subject to a voltage surge. As soon as the starter stops turning over, the alternator is trying to replace the juice used to start. It will usually peg the voltage regulator, at least for a few seconds, when the motor starts up and usually charges high for awhile. Many of the newer electronic gadgets have surge protection, but a healthy alternator will put out 16-16.5 voltas right after starting and if your regulator is a little sick 24 volts to whatever.
I generally glance at my volt meter, before turning on the CB. Don´t really think it will hurt wiper motors and such much. But I have seen Delco alternators, put out enough juice to burn out brake light bulbs.[addsig]

This "accessories-on/accessories-off at start up" battle has raged continuously since at least the days of third-brush generators and vacuum-tube car radios. Apparently, there is yet no end to this War of the Techies.

Frank, the battle scarred Inspector Gadget would tenderly suggest that you turn a deaf ear toward the techies and turn a good ear toward Tug-n-pull. He has, once again, dispensed the sage advice of a wise village elder.

Respectfully submitted,

Inspector-G

Honestly screw turning things on and off, I have a real gripe!

I don't mind when she leaves her things in her truck, it is her truck, but do not and I repeat DO NOT PUT A HAIR SCRUNCHY AROUND MY SHIFTER I hate that. What if I am cruising around and see a fellow jeeper, I give the dude a wave and he starts looking conspicously at my shifter! The ever present scrunchy has returned!! I through it out the side of the jeep (into a proper waste disposal unit of course) but the damn thing reappears??? :-x It is a curse!

Oh well 8 years and this is all I can't stand about her, I am doing pretty good!

If he starts looking at your shifter then he is trying to make sure his girlfriend/wife isn't the only one that does it. He searches other's Jeeps to try and find friends.

Seriously though, at least that means you have a lady that doesn't mind getting her hair messed up. I think you should have a stash of scrunchies for your ladies waiting for her when she gets in.

Sort of, the scrunchy is to keep the hair from getting messed up, I think. I don't know. But there is something sexy about a woman hair being blown around in a toppless jeep!![addsig]
