OT: Bow Hunters

I'm looking at buying a new compound bow, and know little about them. I'd appreciate any input as I know there are some very experienced bow hunters here. I'm looking for something in the $300 range, single cam, 75%letoff, 30"draw, and 70lb pull. TIA.

look at the new bear bows - my brother has one and it is a nice bow.
not sure of the price, though.

if you want to spend the money, the mathews sq2 is also a very nice bow.

I love to bow hunt. I now shoot a recurve and don't keep up with the compound market as well as I used to. I have heard good things about the new Bear bows. When I was a compound shooter I shot a Mathews but they tend to be a little more expensive.

I´ve got a Bear pulley bow that´s 28 years old and still going strong. Restringing it (which is a pain), and resetting the knocks occasionally, is the only maintenance it´s ever required. If I was to buy another. I´d probably opt for something a little lighter, getting over the hump, with the 60 lb. I have, was always kinda a shacky operation, a 50 or 55 shoots just as far and penitration isn´t much different. I use a robust pin sight on mine, not the most accurate, but massive and almost impossible to break in the brush.

ill break away from waht everyone else is saying and tell u go with PSE. an exellent company with the very best customer support of any of the bow companys out there. i shoot a pse baby-g u can order the package from cabelas for 400. it has 80% letoff and is SUPER FAST. im getting almost 305 fps out of my hunting setup. if thats a little to expensive then u might want to look at pse's thunderbolt. also 80% but not quite as fast and i think its close to 300. pse has a lifetime warranty on everything on the bow but string and cables. even if the bow is 30 years old and breaks they will credit u money to a new one. go to www.pse-archery.com and go to the forums/message boards. theres some very nice people that realy know there stuff over there and are more than willing to anser any questions. i would also look at pse's nova series. u can get them with a few diff cams and letoff and are an exellent bow for the money. i shot one for 5 years and never had a single problem with it. any way u go have fun and be safe,

I have a "Bear Polar II" I used to shoot. Bought back in 1977. Great bow. (compound) 37# after dropoff, Don't think it's made anymore though. Or it's metamorphisized into something totally different today!

I'll second lankchevy and say go with a PSE. I bought my bow (Nova V4) complete with 6 arrows for $215 dollars 4 years ago. The PSE board is as friendly a group as the people here on Jeepz.com, and very helpful as well. The key is to go to a good archery shop and have them work with you to determine what is best for you. I'd stay away from mail order since it's your first bow because there's a lot to do to a new bow that a beginner might not be able to do. The place where I bought my bow (Shooters Supply across the river in Paducah, KY) even throws in a free year of indoor range usage, normally costs $5/hour.

I'm looking at an '00 Hoyt MagnaTec right now, 30" draw and set to about 65lbs. With quiver, sight, and a dozen arrows the guy wants $340. Any idea on this price?

I live in Metropolis, the home of Superman and Harrah's Riverboat Casino, it's right on I-24 before you hit the Ohio river.

Don't know much about Hoyt bows. I've got some friends that I can ask. I'll give you a shout back later.

We get through Metropolis every time we got to Turkey Bay, LBL. You'll have to come up and join us on a trail run next time we run the trails in the area of Vienna. That's not too far from you. We usually camp at Ferne Cliff State Park.

Our Sheriff's Dept.'s radio gets real bad skip from down there, the Massac Co. frequency.

Let me know if you find anything on this bow.

And to another post above, this is not my first bow but my second. I'll be replacing a cheap bow that I've used for the past 3 years.

Need advice on a hard top

I've got a buddy that goes to Turkey Bay quite often. I've been trying to juggle my work/family committments to go with him. Do holler at me the next time you head to the Vienna area. I go through Vienna about every weekend going to my in-laws in Anna, IL. I'd like to find some trails up that way, it's only about 15 miles from my house to Vienna. Plus, another buddy of mine has a new rubicon he's wanting to try out.

Have you had any luck this year bow hunting? I shot my first deer ever (bow or gun) on Oct. 13th. I've been shooting a bow for 4 years but don't get out much do to work and family committments. I've sent an e-mail to a guy about that Hoyt, hopefully he'll get back to me soon.

No luck this year, seen plenty of trophies, all within shotgun range, but that does me no good with a bow. I was out this morning, just saw a spike buck. I need to rattle more.

hoyt makes a good bow also. accualy thats what i almost went to 3 or 4 years ago. its what my brother and cousin both shoot. hoyts new bows with cam and a half are very very smooth and fast. just make sure whatever u get is set up right and fits u good.
