Over heating, Radiator i think?

Have a 95 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo. It's running at 210 when stopped at lights. Then when I accelerate it cools down to its normal running temp. I looked under the hood to see coolant leaking from the stock radiator. Could the radiator be the only problem? The only reason I ask is there's a very very laud bearing type noise coming from what I think is the fan clutch. That can only be herd during the winter time. I had the water pump replaced last year, and I don't think they replaced the fan clutch when doing so. Could it also be the fan clutch or jut one or the other?

My jeep wasn't leaking but got hot when I was idling too long at a stop. I had the thermostat replaced and that fixed the overheating.

You should check the fan clutch to see if it is not slipping at idle but if you hear noise from that area , pull the serpentine belt off and check the water pump shaft for movement and harsh resistance. The bearing may be on its way out. The fact that your engine coolant temperature is not stable suggests that you should change the thermostat and gasket as previously posted but the water pump may not be moving the coolant through the engine fast enough to cool it in the radiator. If water pump change is warranted and you have the 4.0 I6, also get a replacement bypass tube that threads into the pump as you cannot guarantee a clean extraction from to old pump to reuse in the new pump. Besides , they are often corroded . If the threads on the tube where it threads into the pump are not in good condition as they usually tend not to be after removal , you will experience leaks if reused and the tube is not possible to remove with water pump in place due to valve cover clearance issues. Get both parts , pump and tube in addition to thermostat and gasket and a good flush . Your jeep will love you again . Greg

Ok i know its been a while sense i posted this. my jeep grand has the, 6cl 4.0l auto. Im going to buy parts in the morning. The radiator is leaking quite a bit more. I checked the mechanical fan(the only fan it has) its on from starting it cool tel it reaches normal operational temp, to where it starts to overheat. Never changes speed or turns off. I can spin the fan when the cars off but it doesn't spin completely freely has a little resistance. Both water pump, and thermostat were changed last summer. the screeching noise is only when its really cold outside. Im thinking the noise is the fan clutch maybe or a pulley. More concerned about the overheating to 210. So is a new clutch in order as well as radiator?

Sorry I missed your post until AFTER your trip to the parts store , I would have suggested checking the idler pulley as well . The screech your reporting on cold days seems common , at least in my case to sometimes . Check the hub that the clutch fan mounts to which is a bushing pressed into the air conditioning / alternator bracket . See if that spins alright with no binding. You don't want that to blow up , it'll take out the radiator. I would definately consider changing the clutch fan as it sounds like its on its way to seizing. Make certain all the air is out of the cooling system and not creating air pockets as that will cause restriction in coolant moving freely and cause hot spots in the block. That's not good . Long term can cause damage such as internal cracks . Surprised your jeep does not have an electric fan also , did someone remove it ? It most certainly should have had one when it was new ! If the temp reaches 210 or better , the electric fan would definately kick on . Glad your pump and thermostat were replaced , regular flushing will keep the pump in better shape . Good to change thermostat every flush .

Replaced the radiator, it's running nice and cool now. Gonna check out all the pulleys and the parts you mentioned. Might have to wait til it drops down colder outside so it will make the noise. It runs quiet when it's warm out

Happy your jeep is in better health , sorry it cost so much sometimes. Warm , quiet & cold , noisy is most likely the law of physics thing , expansion and contraction . But this is a jeep , not a sidewalk , I know . Lol. The last time this item was present in my jeep , it was the idler pulley . Thank goodness they are inexpensive. Mine is good now , but may have to swap an air conditioning compressor pulley and bearing. We must be careful not to over tighten serpentine belts . Over tight serpentine belts is detrimental to ALL accessories.
