I've been busy building my photography business over the past couple of years and kinda ignoring my Jeep, but I plan a trip in June 2011 to Alaska - the one I wanted to take when I was 18. SO i've got to get my YJ up to snuff for such a journey (I'm guessing 11,000 miles and 42 days).

I got a neglected but once loved 90 YJ about 5 years back. It's my first Wrangler ( I had a jeep pickup for 11 years) and I got a steal - $1500! It needed an engine (PO had done a chevy 305 conversion and blown the engine) and tires. Or so I thought at the time...

It's got a 2" suspension lift and 1" shackles, all stainless bits (hinges, etc), 32" mudders, nerf bars, bigger flares, seat covers, console, stereo upgrade, etc.
I gave it new top, new U-joints, new brakes, new steering shaft, fixed the 4WD, removed the lightbar, added a CB and tow hooks and replaced the engine - and then I found that the trans was only partly installed (no wiring, not a proper thing with EOD and lockup converter!). New rad went in but not before the a lunched a piston.

Seems the rad was undersize, the carb a *******ized frankenstein and the engine I got from a buddy had mis-adjusted valves...so I've been driving it on 7 cylinders - when I drive it that is. In 07 put a whole 250 miles on it and since state inspection last june 20 I'm up to 482 miles.

I managed to get the mileage from 8 on premium to 11 on regular. A new carb is enroute and I've started looking for a new motor - I just don't have the time to rebuild what's in there and I want a warranty on it.

Anyway, here's a pic from the first year when we actually drove it a bit - 4800 miles that year.

I spent about 15 years as a mechanic (cars and motorcycles) but I've been out of that for 10 some years now. I lost my garage to my business (turned it into a photography studio) so I felt real bad this winter when the Jeep sat outside - it's rust free, well, it was.

Welcome to the Z.

You sound pretty lucky that it's rust free, considering where you live. Best of luck on preparing for your journey, sounds like a great adventure, especially for a photographer.

Welcome! Beaver eh? We're neighbors! Im in Erie, club is in Clarion. There are many competent Jeep builders in this area...were you looking for someone to finish your build?

Not finish it, it's basically done. I could use a 20gal gas tank, a new chevy V8, new tires/rims (stock most likely but i'm still going over options), and a new radio. Simple stuff. Well, OK, the engine isn't perhaps the simplest to some, but I've changed it before so it's not a terrible task. I just don't want to build one.
