I will order my first Jeep this spring. I have decided on a 4 door Wrangler X Unlimited. I can't see any advantage to paying $800.00 for a hard top that I don't have a place to store when removed. Perhaps I am missing something.

I am undecided about limited slip differential. Is it needed in addition to 4 wheel drive and stability control?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. (I might not take it, but I'll certainly appreciate it!)

4wd is all you need....... the limited slip is more for on-road/wet conditions, etc.... just remember that it's not a sports car, and you'll be fine.

With an open dif (no limited-slip), your 4WD is basically 2WD - one rear and one front. For on-road and mild off-roading, it's fine. I'm wishing I had lockers or, at least, limited-slip......but I make do with what I've got.
I think you'll be happy with the soft top once you get used to it..............very, very versatile!!

Welcome to the obsession and never forget:

Thanks for the replies.

"once you get used to it"???

255/75R17 tires with 4.10 ratio (tow package)

Yeah the limited slip would be a good choice then, I don't remember what the power transfer ratio is on the stock limited slip but I think it's respectable. Thats assuming that you could get the limited slip for less than $700 or so extra. I remember when I bought mine (03) that they wanted nearly 4 K more for the pkg that came with the D44 and the limited slip, needles to say I ended up with the open D35

......."once you get used to it"???..........

I was just suggesting that it wasn't like owning a normal "car" - hard top shielding out the world. I wouldn't have a hard top on my Jeep if you gave me one.....just a personal preference. The soft top will (eventually) be a bit noisier than you're used to, if you have never owned a Jeep. But they're very, very easy to take down/put up as weather dictates. Like I said before, I think you'll love it.

I'd say go with the soft top. As mud said, it's so much easier to get topless that way. As for the LSD, I'd say get that too.....ummm...the Limited Slip Diff, that is. Not advocating any out of body experiences here. I wish I'd had it a number of times. When my Jeep was stock, there were several occasions when I would drive through a ditch or rut or over an obstacle where I had more than enough belly clearance, but the suspension wouldn't travel enough to keep all the tires on the ground, and I'd be spinning two tires in the air in 4wd. LSD would cure that.

Thanks again to everyone for the replies.

I am presently driving an F250 diesel, so I doubt that noise will be a problem. (My wife thinks it's loud, I think it's quiet.)

The noise is the rattling of the hardware more than engine or ambient road noise. It can get annoying.

The limited slip does give you some advantages even off road, but for the money they're asking for, just install a selectable locker for a little more money. Then, when called upon you can lock up and make it a 3 wd. Ox lockers are nice.

If the limited slip isn't included in the stability control package (it probably is not), then I would definately opt for it. My 05 Unlimited is the first Jeep I have had with the factory Trac-loc (same as you would order) and I was really surprised at how well it works. It makes a huge difference and is well worth paying for.
