Have noticed a rattle that seems to be coming through the exaust. when i give it a little gas it goes away. not there all the time.
could it be a loose timing chain?

Often the inside of the Cat starts to come apart, sounds kind of like a tin can full of nuts rattling. Sometimes a baffle in the muffler rusts and rattles. Saw one old Renix with a timing chain so loose it actually cut into the cover.

I've never had any timing chain rattle in any of my XJ's 87, 88, 96. I have heard of some octane ping (rattle) in the post 97 models.

I had a cat go bad on my 95 yj. Try hitting the cat with your hand to see if you can hear anything that sounds loose. UHHH... Forgot you may want to do this when the engine is cool

Sounds like good advice.....May be the Cat. I seem to have noticed that if I ride over a chuck hole (bump), I got the same rattle. You're right it does sound like a bunch of loose bolts. Haven't hit the cat with my hand yet; just got home and waiting for it to cool down. Could this be why I don't hear it all the time or when I give it gas it goes away?

Mine did the same thing. As the exhaust pressure increased with RPM the noise would go away. As I let off or slowed down and the pressure decreased the rattle would reappear. So I hogged it out and waited untilI had to smog it before I replaced it. As I had just bought the jeep It was driving me nuts !!!

Yeah it's probably the inside of the cat coming apart, saw an F-150 have the same problem, driving down the road and started shooting the wadding out of the pipe, little fireballs all over the place lol

Glad you guys are here to help. this is a great site and I'm glad to be a part of it. Thanx again:shades:.
