WHen i shut my jeep down it turns off extremely ruff it will somtimes make a air sound like its releasing air from the motor some where....very nasty any ideas???

What year? What model? What engine? Fuel injected or not?

Important stuff

Kind of like a coughing, knocking, sputtering sound like it's horribly breathing it's last breath as the engine chugs to a stop after the key is off?

ahhh they call that "dieseling"

From Wikipedia:

A carburetor that does not close entirely can contribute to running once the engine is off, for the extra fuel and oxygen mixture can combust easily in the warm piston chamber. Similarly, hot vaporized oil gases from the engine crankcase and provide ample fuel for dieseling.

Items similar to carburetor cleaners and carbon cleaners have been suggested as partial remedies for attempting to clean the piston chambers and valves of engines that run too rich.

Yah so you think the carb is running rich i also smell gasoline ....not bad but enough where its noticable. I tried the carb jet spray...no luck. Gas treatment... no luck either ...is there a way to tune my carb. Its running extremely rich ...horrible gas milage. 86 jeep xj 2.8 4 by 4.

Thanks, Nate... That's exactly the line of thought that I was running, between both jobs, hard to get on here as often...

I experienced this with my Reliant, and as well with my brother's Grand Waggy, it's carb-related for sure, as was posted... Reliant needed a carb rebuild. Grand Waggy needed a good healthy blow-off-your-eyebrows blast of carb cleaner. Unfortunately, I do not know that much about carburetors, have not yet had the joy of pulling one out and tinkering with it on the bench, so all I can tell you is that your carb is unhappy, and needs cleaning, if it's all gunked up, these problems arise, and the fuel efficiency suffers... There are, I believe, ways to tune the carb, but again, I do not know...

With the Reliant, feeding it premium helped a lot with the problem till the carb was repaired. When it was dieseling, pushing the gas pedal to the floor AFTER the engine was turned off usually made it stop, otherwise it would sit there and chug for up to 2 minutes...

running rich like that could theoretically clog your catalytic converter, overheat your spark plugs, foul them, stall out, not start....

it sounds like you need to have your carb removed, cleaned, and reinstalled...
