RE: mandatory reading

I purchased and installed superlift's superride 4" lift springs onto my CJ7, and the ride quality has gotten worse. Someone told me to put longer shackles, (shackle lift) , and it would improve. I do have a 3/4" shackle lift i could use. I would just like a second opinion on the matter. Plus, I would like to paint the jeep. Which numbers on the number plate do I use to get the original paint code? It looks like it is a Root Beer brown when it is buffed.

engine vibes

How long has it been on the Jeep? They do take a while to break in. Did you overtighten the shackle bolts? If they are too tight the shackles will not be able to move and this will definately cause a rough ride. They do not need to be very tight - especially if you use locknuts with nylon in them.

What kind of shocks are on it? Gas charges shocks will ride rougher than hydraulic.

I doubt longer shackles will make any real noticeable difference in the ride.

Their 4" CJ lift is the one that earned them the nickname "Superstiff". I've heard people talk about how they have improved over the years, but I still hear more complaints about their CJ springs than any of the other big names. They last a long time though, and the ride gets better.

Like TC said, check the shackle bolts. They don't need to be very tight. Use locknuts so they stay in place.

Longer shackles can help the ride a little. Might as well try them out since you already have a set.

Ill have to check those. I think I did crank them down, only because the bolts were alittle short, and i was trying to get every bit of threads onto the nut. I think I will install the longer shackles while I have it apart anyway. I suppose it wouldnt hurt. Thanks TC and Junk.

Then I'd get some longer bolts, and might as well get greaseable ones too ;)

RE: Re: RE: mandatory reading

Why would longer shackles help. Thats just going to put the shackle more at a bad angle. Cj lift springs for some reason seam a little shorter than stock ones bringing the shackle to a more straight up position instead of on an angle. If you want it to flex better move your rear shackle hangers forward an inch.

Well, I haven't done any studies but it seems like it would help. He already has a set, so why not try it?

They will allow the springs to flex easier offroad......and in turn break-in/wear out faster if you want to speed that process along a little.

I would think it would allow more wheel travel (some), but it wouldn't do anything for compensating for a stiff spring rate.

I got longer bolts, and stayed with the same shackles. it smoothed up the ride some, @ the same time i aired down to 9psi , street and rock it improved. Im just gonna hafta settled for the nature of the beast on this one for now.

Redcone Pass

The tire man that mounted my tires said it would be fine, as long as it was in town driving, and 45mph is the fastest street in town. they dont even bulge on the sidewall, or feel squirmy on or off the road, and the tread sits flat on the ground.

Oops, im sorry, typo. 19psi.
I was running them at 30psi, also, the rear end is an amc20 true loc. Does that mean it is limited slip? Ive never pulled the cover off, but the sticker inside the glove box says caution: even with one wheel off the ground , this vehicle can still move, or something like that.

do the chalk or dust or dirt test - run over and see how much tread is making contact - you want an even footprint - while 19psi may be "safe" for not popping a bead - i'd rather have a bit rougher ride and longer, even tread wear than a cushier ride (yea... i run 25psi or so in my 33x12.5 BFG M/T's) - my $.02
