I rebuilt my transmission because when I bought the jeep itwas grinding when shifting into 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and when downshifting in allgears. I found my shift dogs for 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] lying in tobottom of the case and synco were shot. Now that I have it back together andinstalled my problem is when I’m at idle I can shift in all gears and downshiftfine once I take off and go from 1[SUP]st[/SUP] to 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] I can’t getin gear, I can put it in 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] thru 5[SUP]th[/SUP] and downshift backto 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] but it won’t downshift into 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] or 1[SUP]st[/SUP]until I’m almost completely stopped. I’mcompletely baffled

What trans is this? Could be in the shifter forks. Some have teflon pads that wear on the shifter forks, sometimes the forks themselves wear. Did you replace all syncros?

i havent got it figured out yet, I was going to pull it back out this weekend and look back inside the trans, but didnt get around to it. I did replace the clutch master/slave cyl. helped a little but not much. it is a AX 5 trans and it had all the synros, bearings and seals along with a couple of items found bad during teardownn the clutch assy is only about a year old.

Update to my shifting problem, I drove the jeep over to my friend’shouse who lives about 30 miles from me and when I got 5 miles from him the jeepstarted shifting from 1st to 2nd and it worked fine the whole day so I decidednot to pull it, put this morning when i went to the store in it, it had the sameold problem until I got back in my neighborhood, so now I’m thinking maybe a lubricationproblem. any suggestions

You can try Redline MT90, it's about the best synthetic fluid available for this transmission. Little pricey but if it doesn't help, it's a mechanical problem.

I tried Redline before i rebuilt it to see if it would help. you are correct it is pricey the other problem is i had to drive 150 miles to get it at summit racing because no one has it in my area.

I agree 100% with Bounty on this one....I had a similar problem on a "95YJ with an AX15 & the MT90 worked wonders. On mine it would shift ok after warming up a little, but it was a fight to get it in gear when cold/cool. After changing to the Redline it shifted great all the time.
Good luck & let us know what you find.
