i had a thread about a week ago about excessive play in my axel shaft. i took it apart and discovered that the bearings were shot. i tried 4 different bearings and they are all too small. the boys at napa were stumped, and so was i. so today i took it to the stealership today to see if they had a bearing that would fit........guess what they did not, they were all too small. the shop foreman came out (jeep wheeler by the way) to look at it. he said that he is almost positive that it is either a d44, or a chrysler 8.25. they pulled up a diagram of a d44 for me to look at and it was pretty much identical. now that would have sold me right there, but there is a stamp on the axle that says 35c. i also know for a fact that there is no c clip but there is 35c stamped right on the dif cover. the tag was ripped off by the way. if anyone has any pics of their rear pumpkin off hand that you could post stating what axle you have i would appreciate it......i have been looking for a bearing for a week now and it sucks!!!!

thanks!!!!

oops.....could a mod move this to the tech forum.....sorry.

the drawings are a little sketchy but it is looking like i have a dana 44!!!! just one more question, for those with the d35 is your dif fluid drain plug a screw in deal or just a rubber plug that pops in. i remember in my other wrangler that it was a rubber piece, and in this one its a screw on type that takes a 3/8 wratchet extension.

thanks utah... i should have thought about that.

my yj has a rubber plug on the rear....d35 I believe, if that is stock....front has the screw kind

no pic of the chrysler in that link .....?

They never have anything for that axle. Good axle, but no tech support or accessories. It's sort of the "Macintosh" of axles. :?

The early D35 has screw in fill plugs, later model D35's are rubber fill plugs.

The c in D35c does not stand for c-clips. The early non c-clip D35's are still labeled as D35c, c for custom or some nonsense that had to do with Chrysler doing the final assembly, not Dana, or so the story goes.

The D35 was the only stock rear axle for all YJ's sold in the US. What year and model is your jeep?

The 8.25" that came in '90s XJ's is flat at the bottom of the diff cover, about 6" across. The diff cover is not flat, but round and does not follow the flat contour of the diff housing. The 8.25" also has 4 funny looking stubs cast into the diff above the pinion yoke, looks as if they should be tapped for a traction bar or something.

Rock crawl comp damage

Is it possible you have aftermarket HD shafts? How many splines do they have?

Both my YJ with a D35 and my XJ with a Chrysler 8.25 had/have the rubber plug. Only the front axles (both D30's) had the screw plug. How 'bout you posting a pic of yours???

found out that it was a dana 35 from a 87 wrangler......finally found a jeep dealer that could actually help me. glad that is over with now, i thought that i was never going to find the right bearing.
