I have a 91 YJ 4.0L that is cutting out as I drive it. It is like the engine electrical is shutting off. I wait a couple of minutes and it starts up and runs normally for a minute or two and then the electrical shuts off again. It only happens when the engine is at operation temp (not overheating) and then not all the time. Help!

I've personally experienced that a few years ago and tracked it down to a failing/failed ignition coil. When I removed the coil and shook it like a soda can, you could hear the oil inside sloshing ... you shouldn't be able to hear anything.

I do not recall if there was any kind of test. A new coil was only $20 bucks back then so it was swapped and all was good again.

Happened to a friend of mine. It turned out to be a cracked cap. The crack would expand as the motor heats up causing it not to run. After it cooled off the crack would close and it would run again.

thanks wood badger. I had a friend suggest that to me this morning and it is great to have your experience to add to his guess. Will try and let you know.

You must have an involvement in Scouting to recognize those beads.

yes, have three beads and my buddy that agreed that it was most likly the coil has four. It is what got us in the moutains on weekends when we were younger men. Now we just take a ride up a dirt road and over a rock or two in Moab when we are lucky. I changed out the coil last evening and will have to take a longer trip to see if that worked, thanks again for you suggestion. Spiritree

That is GREAT! I attended WB in 2004 ("I used to be an antelope, ..."), got my beads in 2005 but have not yet been on the program side.

Currently finding my way around as an ASM, Venturing AA and OA AA.

My son's Eagle BOR is 6/27 (YEAH!!) and he ages out in November so I'm trying to see what my involvement will be going forward. Currently working as Advisor to the VP Programs for Overdrive, the council-wide Venturing equivalent of Camp-O-Ree.

Got into 4-wheeling so my wife can get to some of our favorite places more easily. She has MS so hiking/backpacking is not an option.

congraulations on the Eagle! Sounds like you are deep in scouting. I have been almost out for a while but never all. Work on a Council Relationship Committee. Life has a way of changing how we need to do things. Glad you found a way to take you wife to God's Country once in a while. Hope she is able to manage ok. Sounds like she has a great partner and that is more than half the battle. Yours Spiritree
