Spring Over Lifts

I now am looking at Rusty's 5 1/2" spring over lift kit and I was wondering if its good or any problems that came about with it. I am not a serious off roader, i am mainly lifting my jeep for looks and this lifts "Claims" it keeps the factor ride so I am trying to stay with that. I understand there is welding that is involved which isn't a big deal cause I know a guys but I really want to know if this kit is reliable and the ride and what size tires I can fit?[addsig]

in "street jeep" form you should be able to run 35" tires easily without an rubbing. Maybe a little on the rear fender flares if you hit a large bump. You will also want to do a SYE for a lift that large on a YJ. Extended brake lines as well will be needed and some other items, depends on the completeness of the kit. You will be able to save somemoney by cutting the shock mounts off the axles and rewelding them higher on the tube.[addsig]

You also need to consider the gearing if you go to larger tires... If you have a 2.5L then you have 4.11 gears, 4.0L= 3.05... if I remember correctly. If you run 35s then you def. need to upgrade gears if you havn't already. Although I have heard of people that run 35s on 3.05G but they never took it out of 4th gear on the hwy and the gas milage suffered. I too am looking to do an SOA so I have been reading as much as I can about it before I do it. I was wondering where you found an SOA "kit" though... I know they are out there but I never found one... wanna toss me a link if you have one? If you don't have a link, what comes with the kit and how much? Good luck![addsig]

Type in SOA and then Try Spring Over Axel in the Jeepz.com Search and you will see a ton of information there. I have thought about it and there are stron arguments both ways here. One member even did and hated it and took it off. Some say that you are crazy to spend that much money on a kit when you can do it so much cheaper yourself with a little fab work. You will have to move the shocks, rather you should move the shocks because the canister will interfere with the axle tube on a lift that tall. You are decreasing the shocks angle of operation. You could mount the shock upside down and not worry about it but I have heard horrror stories from people who have done this. Not sure why mounting shocks upside down is bad.[addsig]

I did the SOA and did not like the way it handled or the rear end axel wraping. I guess I could have spent more money and got the SYE and extended shaft. But all I need is to run 33s so i kept my body lift which dosent look too awful bad and Im having my stock springs rearched with an inch added to them. The body lift dosent look too bad cause on my nerf bars I cut the brackets and re welded them up closer to the body so it hides some of the gap. Im not detering anyone from doing it cause it did look kewl but it just wasnt for me. my 2cents worth.[addsig]

i think mounting the shocks upside down is bad because you are exposing the piston more directly to harm.. i think thats the only thing[addsig]
