Stalling At Idle

Hey, I am new to this board. I just bought a 1987 Jeep Laredo six cylinder.

I have the above problem-stalling. I noticed a couple of how-to articles that seem to suggest

a solution, but i am not sure what type of carb is one my jeep. Any comments would be appreciated---------

just get a new carb at autozone!! The best thing i've everdone!! Its so nice to have a fresh new carb!![addsig]

hehe...finally a problem easily solved...and in 15 mins...i've done this fix about a dozen times...i'd explain it to you in detail...but it's soo much easier for me to send you the link of a qualified professional...(i think anyway)...here ya go...

this really does fix the problem and has for a number of jeeps i've fixed before...one piece of advice though..the best and easiest way to unclog those little tubes is a fresh can of carb and choke cleaner...just put the end of each tube on the nozzle of the can and spray the crap outta them...it'll blow the built up junk right out![addsig]

I'm guessing its a 4.2 , and if it's that the case, lission to beefy85cj7 , he's done his 15 minute job on my 88 YJ and it ran better, but I had to buy a new carb and I love it... A webber car stop the problem is beefys doesn't. But the webber will cost major$$$ , buy a holley rebuild carter and just adjust it good, and it should run like a champ!![addsig]

Thanks for the input everybody. I dont know what kind of engine, just that it is a six.



It stalls hot and cold. Sounds like the carter idle problem that I have been reading about. Therefore, I am going to try the venturi/clean solution suggested by beefy.



I am going to do it tomorrow morning--- other than that, the jeep runs real good with 165K on it, it is good to be back behind the wheel of a 4x4. . . my last jeep was a '75 CJ5, but that was ages ago. [addsig]

before you start your jeep hit the gas to the floor. Then turn it on adn it should idle higher than usual. When it's cold out my jeep would idle at around 600 rpms but after i hit the gas and start it, it idles at 1600.[addsig]

i have a good guess what you prob is i have an 88 loredo and where the idle screw hits the tempture thing to adust the idle the plastic round thing that hangs off the front of the carb was my prob i took it off since i had to transfer it to the remanufactured one, runs great you will have to pat the gas the first 5 min of run time but after that it should be fine uless its like mine and has a mind of its own and lost all at the same time, and if so it could be in the egr system plus i would also just get a new one the remanfac. one i bought was only around 100 dollars after i turned in the core[addsig]

So, i was unable to get the choke plate off. I did not have the right tool to loosen those two small nuts that hold the plate in place. So, while I could see the venturi cluster, I was not able to take it out and really clean it--- i sprayed some carb cleaner in there and that helped for driving immediately after, but not later.


Also, a gasket on the top of the engine has deteriorated and there is an oily mist coming out the top. Should this be happening? Definately loosing oil. Changed the oil and filter 10 days ago, and the jeep was pretty much dry last night (had to put in four quarts)[addsig]

oof-ah... that's a lot of oil to lose in one day.... the gasket/grommet at the top of your engine i'm assuming is your PCV... get to a dealer and pick up some new gaskets... clean out your PCV while you're at it.

i used engine degreaser, sprayed it down the tube, then followed it up with 120 psi from the bicycle pump. it finally gave through and now it actually lets things through! lol

Thanks, that is it. . . the opening closest to the fire wall. I am going to call the dealer, what does "PCV" stand for?

one more question, is this valve supposed to be open during normal operation of the jeep. In other words, when i replace the gasket, will there stil be an opening?


It seems that the deteriroated gasket is a ring gasket, or looks like a donut-------- so even a new one will still leave the valve open.[addsig]
