ll I thought I'd post some pics of my new project.

First I sanded down the hood double primered and rattle canned Rustoleum on it

Before w/clear coat flaking off badly:

After:

It looked so good I decided I'd just spray paint the whole thing. If you prep the heck out of it and wetsand the final coat with some 1500 grit sandpaper and then buff it out with a cleaner wax it looks pretty danged good

Stripping and sanding/grinding floorboards:

Tomorrow the Herculiner roll in bedliner in the whole interior. I began With a wire wheel on my grinder and it was going pretty good but my neighbor brought over some striiper and it worked great. I just brushed it on it came right off to the bare metal and now I'll hit it with the grinder a little more to rough it up so the Herculiner sticks.

I'll post some more as I go.

I'm impressed with how good the spary pain looks.... Let us know how it stands to use and abuse!

That is turning out real nice!

My hood has the same look and I wasn't sure if it was a paint quality or engine heat issue. The plan is to install some hood vents, then repaint.

Now all I need to find is Rustoleum in my color!

I think it's paint quality and crappy clear coat. Here's a couple more pics from todays 12 hours
After I stripped all the paint off I hit it with a grinder to provide the rough surface for the Herculiner

Masked off all the front end (note cardboard to keep overspray off radiator)

This is gonna see maybe 30 miles a month tops and wil be stored otherwise so we're not too concerned about use and abuse. I know when I tried to grind some of what I'd painted to re-do some body filler it was a booger comin' off!:) I painted a motrcycle like this a few years ago and it still looks fine!

I re-read my previous posts and it gives the impression I spray painted it but I changed my mind and went with some custom mixed single stage enamel and shot it with a $30 Cambell Hausfeld spary gun.

This is the finished project (almost) on the beach where it should be!

I still am waiting for the fender flares and seat covers. I've put a cool roof rack on it too but I can't find my camera connection cable. I think it's in my travel trailer!

All in all it took me 10 days of 10-12 hours each! A lot of work but it turned out better than I thought it would. I have been both a mechanic and a house painter in previous jobs so those experiences helped a lot. It isn't easy, but if you take your time you can end up with a nice rig. Suspension mods are next. I'll be sure and post them!

Gator washed up on the beach. Note my new "top hat" storage bin and finally got the flares on too.

We found a nice place to go muddin' and some light hill climbin' too so we had a blast and maxed out on fish two days in a row! I love the Jeep thing!

Breakdown paint and bedliner and prep supplies 500 , roll bar covers 200, okole seat covers 200, fender flares 400, center console 60, cover for when I don't feel like putting on the top 60, top hat rack 50 and various other stuff less than 2000 plus 5500 original purchase price= 7-7500 total. I looked around a lot before we bought this one and I'm happy with the overall cost because cosmetically it's all new. I'm going to spend about another 500 rebuilding the front end with all new tie rod ends, springs, brake calipers, brake lines etc... and I'll have a total investment of around 8K for a great running, good looking fishing rig. Compared with the cost of a new one that's not too bad!

How do you like the herculiner? Do you have any shots on that since I am trying to decide on herculiner or rhino lining?

I like the Herculiner but I abused it a little too much I think. I wish I hadn't stripped it down to bare metal either. I think it would have had better adherence if I had just "scuffed" the existing paint. I carry a big metal tool box in the back along with jacks and shackles and everything else. All that junk banging around back there has knocked off a lot of it. I think it would have happened with rhino liner too. Who knows? Abuse is abuse. I think if I had a plastic tool box and took a little better care of it wouldn't be so bad. I'm going to scuff it and put another coat on it in the next couple months. Here's a pic from when I first did it. Maybe if I had done a 3rd coat it would have been better. I had a LOTTT left over.

yea... herculiner is meant to bond to paint - not metal - so scuff.. scuff... scuff... and when you think you've suffed enuff - scuff again - prep is everything - i did mine 3yrs ago and no complaints - the only places i had a problem is where i got lazy - and if you have thin spots a shot of black paint covers it up pretty well - also it bonds to itself - which means if you have a problem and have to re-apply - you dont have to strip it like you would with rhino or dura liner - just my $.02 and your jeep looks great! love the fishin shots! (grew up outside orlando, fl - i miss fishing!)
