My old CJ has some of that as well, I think it's a Jeep thing. That said, if your suspension components are excessivly worn, it will get worse, and can lead to dangerous conditions. I would check the tie rods, etc. for wear.
Check the intermediate shaft from the lower section of the column. there should be a joint there and a coupler on the steering gear input shaft. replace the loose components as nescessary, then check the steering gear end play. this end play can be adjusted with the locknut and allen bolt located on top of the steering gear. Also, check your tie rod ends, balljoints.
It's more of a CJ thing than a Jeep thing. Have somebody turn the steering wheel back and forth why you check every component of the steering system. You will track down the excessive play.
Never being satisfied with the excessive length of the steering column in 'Black Betty' I replaced the column gaining 8 inches. Upon disassembly I noticed that there were no splines left on the damn shaft! The only thing holding it together was the single bolt!
