stuck in the mud no 4x4 damnit

so me and the girlfriend were out playin around for christmas in her 89 cherokee all stock we just bought it it has the 4.0 automatic with the 231 transfercase but any way we made it down this dirt road/trail started slidin a little i put it in 4 low and nothing we were sunk up to the frame the whole time the front tires werent spinning just the rear the part time light came on in dash but nothing engaged what would make it not go into 4 wheel drive it has a front driveline but i dont know alot about the whole thing the worst part i had to get pulled out by a dodge dakota with street tires cause jeep let me down

yeah it looks like i just need to replace the vacuum lines that goes from the front axle to where they go hardline it all seems real loose dont see how would build vacuum
