Sunk

thanx sully

Ok well let me tell everyone about my last sunday. I went out riding with the fsu jeep club and we went to an awesome little crawling spot and drove around there for about an hour. Then we wound up going to an area known as dog lake. Once we arrive we were'nt even there for 5 mins before everyone heads straight for this water crossing. Everyone goes through and I notice thats its pretty deep but i figured that if a fairly stock TJ can make it then I surely must be able to. Keep in mind that I only have a 2" body lift and 32s. I start to go through and I guess i was going a little too fast and water gets sucked up into my engine and I die. We tried taking the plugs out and pumping as much of the water out as possible before we decided to just take it to a shop and have them look at it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how much it will cost me to have it fixed or possibly what could have gone wrong. I dont think I broke any seals b/c when I tried to crank it with the plugs in it never turned completely over so im hoping and praying that I didnt break any piston rods or anything of that nature. I also was arrested for driving though the water along with everyone else in the club. I'll post more on that later on tonight. I appreciate all the input yall' have to give me on this matter.
Thanks

I did the exact same thing a few years back. I went through a water crossing once just fine. Went through a second time just fast enough to make a small wake at my front bumper which was sucked up into my motor. I gave it about half a crank and knew what had happened. It sucked my K&N filter right into my intake manifold. I ended up pulling out all my plugs and soaking up the water in the intake with my socks. Turned it over and had water shooting 6 feet out of my cylinders. Luckily we were next to our camp site so I let it sit without the plugs in over nite to dry everything out. I also cleaned all the plugs with sandpaper. It fired up next day no problem. Good thing it started because I was 200 kms out in the bush up in the mountains. I put an ARB snorkle on it the next week.

spray a little WD-40 in there and on the spark plugs to help get the water out.

Keep turning it over a few times with the plugs out and let it sit and you should be good to go after that.

at least thats the technical term. i had it happen to my fullsized bronco. basicaly it means you cant compress liquid. you said it wouldnt crank completely over. drain the oil and look forwater in it. if its in there it will look milky white if it hasnt sepreated out of the oil. also do the afore mentioned cleaninfg of the plugs and cylinders. if it still wont crank over then you might have some seriouse problems. i locked mine up and had to rebuild the engine in it. cracked a piston and messed up the bearings. i guess it could have been worse i didnt mess up any of the rods..

its caled hydrolocked

also you need to drain all your diffs .. if water got in to the engine it probly got ino the diffs. later all

Re: RE: and then I find this out....

Ok well i talked to the mechanic and he says that my engine has siezed up and that I need a new motor.....not good. Now its a matter of cost and time. I have been wanting to put a small block 350 in it and now is the perfect time i suppose. I need to know about how much a complete 350 conversion will run. Anyone have any guesses? Im also thinking about maybe a Vortec v 6 or bored out 4.0 liter (4.2 L)? Anyone know anything???

skyjacker lift

What modle of jeep is it? If you put a 4.2L crank and rods in a 4.0L you will get plenty of power (it will stroke it to 4.5L), plus the I6 gives torque over a broader and lower rpm range. You can also buy kits for this that can stroke it up to 5.0L. The 258 crank and rods in a 4.0L should be cheaper than a small block conversion. Also you might be able to keep your stock drivetrain, depending on what transmission you have.

RE: skyjacker lift

Where did you take your jeep too? Dont know how long you have been in Tally, but the best place to take it is Jeep Specialist on West Tharpe. The guy there knows his stuff if you can't work on it. If you are wanting to replace the engine, I recommend start reading. If you pay someone you wont get near the satisfaction you would if you did it yourself. I have a 350 I am willing too part w/. It came out of a checker auto about 18 years ago and has about 500 miles on it. I keep fluids in it and crank it by hand. Let me know if you need anything else. Its 3am and im just finishing my work day which started at 7am, so I don't have a lot of time on my hands right now, but i am always willing to help out a fellow jeeper.

RE: Re: Cherokee purchase, what model is best?

Because if time problems and the fact that i need to have a vehicle to drive around I went ahead and told the shop to go ahead and order my new engine, its going to be a parker 4.0l rebuilt. I wish I had the time to do it myself but between work and school I just cant do it. My jep is a 93' Wrangler YJ and its at Cambells Automotive Repair on Bluntstown Highway. Cambells is a great place to have stuff done, the guy it super nice and is the first honest mechanic Ive met.

RE: Re: A girl without her Jeep

ok well, I went out with the FSU jeep club and I was just following b/c we were going into an area that I had never been to before. Apparently, the U.S. Forestry Service had seen our web page and saw where we were riding. So the lady who's heading up the sting (who has arrested about 5 or 6 of my firends for various things) has an undercover truck following us with a HELICOPTER watching us from above. So went to this place that was a restricted area ( I wasn't looking for any signs) and then we wheeled there for about an hour. We grew tired of that place and decided to go to Dog Lake. We weren't there for maybe 5 mins when some of the guys start to cross this little section of the lake. A pretty much stock TJ made it through so I decided I would give it a go. Right as I start hitting the deep stuff and sucking water into my engine they spring their trap. Like 4 or 5 trucks come out with lights a blaring and tell everyone not to move. My jeep stalled in the water and stopped and they made everyone wait for about 15 mins before they could pull me out. So they arrested us for driving through the corner of the lake and wrote us tickets for introducing a substance that could pollute the pond/lake and and driving into a restricted area. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture or is it just me. They knew where we were going to be riding and they didn't take the initiative to warn us to prevent us from damaging the plants and wildlife. Is'nt that entrapment or profiling or something. They didnt just happen to stumble upon us they planned this. Im sure I'll end up having to pay the minimum $850 fine (if I get lucky) and go home to lick my wounds. I mean we were only out there to have fun, not break the law. Is anyone on Jeepz a lawyer? Can anyone help?

Mabye they've had problems with other people tearing the place up and figured it was you guys and that they would catch you red handed. Could also be using you guys to set an example for others thinking about wheeling in the area. I remember reading an article in a JP magazing about a place somewhere in the States that fines you $500 per tire that touches the water.

My belated Christmas (pics)!

Did you drive by any signs? Something similar happened to me but the judge let me off with only a $75 fine b/c i hit the trails a few hundred yards before the one and only sign (it was dark), and i got stuck with a huge towing bill. Long story short, here i am in my little old nissan p/u in the pouring rain crested on a muddy hill ten feet from the pavement burried so deep i can't even open the doors. Instead of letting my buddies pull me out, the squadron of about eight police cars made me call a tow truck. Two tow trucks showd up, and you can imagine the bill of, oh, about 2 hours figuring out how to attatch a tow strap to my frame...and learning that pulling the truck in opposite directions at the same time doesn't work very well. They said it was "too dangerous" because my truck my slide, and it should be left to the professionals. I don't mean to steal your thunder, i just can't resist adding in my story.

Wouldn't want to go deep enough for the spare to hit! X5=$2500!!!!

I dont remember seeing any signs, I wasn't really looking. I guess I thought since I was with a College sanctioned Jeep club That they would only go where its legal. Well im not really too worried about all of this anymore, I'll probably try to get away with community service b/c I really really cannot pay out $1000. I have already spent 3 grand on a new engine.

Probably not entrapment or profiling, or anything else like that. Naw, I don't like the fact that it's getting harder and harder to wheel anywhere because God forbid you might run over a quallamatopango tadpole or something.....most likely they didn't stop you before hand because they can't charge you with intent (unlike other offenses) just for driving toward an area. They had to actually see you commit the "crime" to file any charges. I'm no lawyer, but I play one on the internet, so don't take that as fact. It's simply my conjecture as to the how and why of the whole thing.

RE: Anyone wanna help install a lift in NE Illiniois?

God forbid you might run over a quallamatopango tadpole or something

In my area (SF peninsula) we have to be careful to not run over the Red-Legged Tree Frog...At my uncle's farm the steelhead and the Red-Legged Tree Frogs...At Clear Creek OHV park the San Benito Evening Primrose.
