T176 stuck in first gear

OK, my CJ5 is stuck in first gear. The gear shift itself moves around, but doesn't seem to go fully into gears. I can get the reverse lights to come on, but it still moves forward. The transfer case shift 2wd, 4wd, N & 4Lo fine.

The clutch linkage seems to be fine... well as much as I could see in the ice storm last night.

As I patiently wait to look at it more thouroughly, I thought I'd post to see what you all thought.

Thanks in advance,

X

Take off your shift boot, take off the boot on the bottom of the shifter. Where the stick goes down into the tower there is a dome shaped piece that hold the shifter in place. Push down on this dome shaped piece and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and the stick/dome shaped piece/spring should pop up and you can just pull it out. Get a flashlight and look down into the transmission and you should see the shift forks down in there. Take a long screwdriver and GENTLY move the shift forks till they are centered and then reinstall the shifter. Don't know if that will work but mine has seized in gear before and that fixed it (temporarily). Check and see if the pins that hold the dome shaped retainer in place are firmly in place. If so you might try getting a new stick, new retaining kit (keep the original dome shaped piece as the aftermarket ones are crap), and or replace your shift forks with new ones. Hope that helps!

Glad I could help. My T176 did that about 4 days after I got the Jeep and luckily I had a buddy who previously had the same problem so he knew how to fix it. Before mine locked up it also had a kinda sideways feel when going in and out of reverse. I got the "Shifter lever repair kit" and that fixed it. Just remember do NOT throw away your factory dome shaped retainer! The aftermarket one is thinner and will bend in no time and you're back to square one. I reused my stock retainer and used the new spring and boot and mine's been good since. Most people seem to have problems with the pins coming loose but I haven't had that one pop up yet. At any rate all the parts are available from 4wd.com or quadratec.

Don't mean to be picky, but may I correct you a bit???

WM69.....AND Jeepz!!!.......ROCK!!!!!!!!!

Love to hear these happy stories!!!

The roll pins that hold the shift forks to the rail can also be a problem when they get old. They sometimes will back out of the hole enough to collide with the other shift rails and prevent the transmission from changing gears. No big deal, just something else to watch out for.
