I took out the cat on my '97 TJ, and I could feel a power increase and somehow I still passed emissions. I'm not sure how the sound was effected because I also added a Flowmaster at the same time.[addsig]

You guys know its like a 5000$ fine right? But I guess they would never achually check to make sure its there. In fact that is a good idea...found my next mod.

If you gut the cat it should give your Jeep a little deeper tone or maybe even a possible 'hollow' sound. It will increase the power too, an added bonus

Instead of taking out the cat, it is better to gut it since it will still look like it is there, the only way to tell its gutted would be to tap on it. I don't really see a negative to it since unless the gov't steps in and makes everyone have the same standards as those in California.

vav's, if you're worried about the fine then you wouldnt get in trouble if you just happened to stab a crow bar into it a few times and get it nice and hollow...haha...just an idea, that way if they decide to look underneath the car you've still got a cat...actually had a punk ass cop craw under my jeep last summer in ocean city to check, i think he was a little pissed off at having to get dirty only to find that i wasnt lying and i did have a cat...little did he know

i think the fine is even more than $5000. A lot of exhaust shops wont do it for you unluess you know someone. If you hollow it yourself be sure to clean her out nice and good. If not, chonks of the honeycomb will fall and rattle around, a MOST annoying sound. Youll get a good increase in power, but i say if youre gonna do that, screw the flowss and go with a glasspack, its cheaper and has a good sound.[addsig]

its 10 g's here in cornland, never heard of anyone getting busted for not having one, you could also try tugs approach (its in someother thread).... what officer!? a cat? whats that? I DONT HAVE ONE?! omg i just bought this car!!! the guy i got it from said everything was fine!! so what does this 'cat' do? etc.

I hollowed my cat and had a straight pipe coming from there.... I suggest not doing that... power loss.... but if you put any sort of restrictive device (muffler, glass pack, etc) after that.... you'll be happy with it. be sure to get out ALL of the honeycomb.... you don't want rattles... get it all done once... don't drive around thinking that bolts are flying around under your jeep like i did[addsig]

When I hollowed out mine I used a piece of 1/4" angle iron about 2.5' long. If you use this method just pound it down in one corner and work around the other corners, this will clear out the middle, the rest will just fall into the middle and you can continue to ram it out. Took me about 5-10 minutes to do, but like everyone else said, MAKE SURE YOU GET OUT ALL THE PIECES!!! Otherwise you will hear gastly sounds from your exhaust and you will think something is seriously wrong....[addsig]
