The Drip!

I am getting frustrated! Ok had a decent leak under the jeep, saw it was the oil pan gasket so I changed it out using black rtv sealant on the gasket to pan side. Stopped all leaks except for the front of the timing cover right near the engine pulley. Is there some reason this would keep leaking after changing to a rubber oil pan gasket. Or could there be a gasket leaking up higher on the engine and just looking like it is coming from the timing case cover. Any suggestions?

did you clean and prep the surfaces good where you lay the bead of RTV on the oil pan ?? may have had a sealing problem or sticking problem with the RTV

Yeah, cleaned the surfaces, rubbed them with a clean rag and used a nice bead of high temp black rtv sealant. Now I realize it is coming from the gaskets between the head and the block, and the head and the cylinder. Any thoughts on stopping it.

if its coming from your head i'd try my valve cover gasket you'd be suprised at how much oil they can spill out ... on my s10 i got the torque specs wrong and had a huge oil burn / leak prob and was stumped the oil made it look like it was coming from the head but i took my cover off re-torqued it and BOOM no probs

yep... check the valve cover gasket - saved me from pulling my pan... they are notorious and look like a pan / rear seal leak... just my $.02

Definitely not. I just replaced the oil pan gasket, which was missing the rear gasket area that goes over the rear main cap. It leaked pretty good at that time. But that area is all better. Bought a new valve cover gasket today now to find time to change it and use a bunch of rtv. Hopefully that takes care of the drip.

Traced it down it is definately the timing cover. Has anyone ever changed one? About how long does it take and what needs to come off before you get to the timing cover? What else should I change on an 89 4.2L with 75,000 miles.
