the shuddering jeep?

Can Someone help me figure out this problem?. My 95 GCL shudders when I am waiting with my foot on the brake and in drive with the motor idling. I was told it was the idle control valve which I replaced and it has made no difference. It kinda feels like the transmission is still trying to push the jeep even though I am holding the brake. If I put it in park or nuetral it idles smooth as silk, but as soon as I drop it into drive it shudders. As soon as I release the brake and press the gas it goes fine. It is very aggravating. Help? Tips? Clues?

It's possibly be a Torque converter concern. if it's an electronically actuated lockup t. converter , it might be stuck. just a thought.

I dont know about that.. It has only been my jeep for a couple of weeks and its too cold for a/c. But I will try it and get back to you. I'm pretty sure I've had the heater on everytime,,, would that matter?

No. There is an idle control circuit for when the A/c is on. There is a idle re-learn procedure for after a PCM has been reset; that's where I was going with my line of thinking. I don't know if your car even has that circuit. Most of my experience is on GM stuff- especially my experience on OBDII vehicles. Just trying to throw an idea out there to maybe jar something loose, know what I mean?:)

Thanks for that. I changed the fuel filter today because I was told it may be that but it hasnt helped. My missus is getting ****ed at the car coz shes thinking its a lemon. I just feel it cant be anything major thats wrong with the car. I would be interested in knowing about the idle "re-learn" thing. I dont know a lot about sensors and certain switches and stuff... My mechanical know-how is limited to bolting new bits on and stuff so I need all the how to info I can get.

I'm a little clueless about that stuff. How would I find out if
(a) I have and electronically actuated Torque Converter.
(b) if it is actually stuck
(c) how do I "unstuck" it

Thanks for the help I need all I can get

The only way that i know how is to hook up a DRB3 which is a Chrysler Scantool. from there an option will pop up on the menu to run a torque converter test. If it is in fact equipped with an electronic torque converter and is in fact stuck, the only fix is to try to flush the system or replace the torque converter. if you could gather up more symptoms, we might be able to narrow this down on where to look for the problem. it could also be the Engine itself causing the shudder, map sensor maybe?.

Maybe I should be more clear on what I mean by "shudder". The idle is very rough almost like its going to stall (which it did do twice). But the rough idle is so bad it shakes the car. It happens at random times, though more often than not. If i click it to nuetral or park it idles smooth and pretty. I always let the jeep warm up for at least five minutes before driving away every time after a prolonged stop but it seems to do it more when the engine is cold. I would guess that if in fact it was the torque converter it would do it all the time. I'm really hoping it isnt the TC because I am about out of money.

There is a Service bulletin for a Rough Idle concern on a 4.0 liter. is that what you have or is it a 5.2 V8?

Copied this from another site-

TRY THIS PROCEDURE:
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

I suppose that if your Check Engine light was on you would have mentioned that? The fact that the Check Engine light is off means that either the bulb is burned out, or you do not have a failure of an emissions-related part. The Check Engine light will come on to let you know that something in the emissions system has failed- or if it is running outside the emissions parameters for that model year.

Sorry, I'm rambling...

You need to do the idle re-learn procedure after replacing the idle control valve. I can't find the procedure online.

Nope the check engine light works but does not come on when the rough idle thing happens. I will try cleaning the idle control valve and throttle body assy. cant hurt to try. I dumped a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank today also.

Well the injector cleaner didnt seem to make any difference it still idles really rough. It almost seems like at idle the trans is trying to over-ride the brake (if that makes sense) If I get some time to myself and without snow I'll pull the throttle body off and clean it really good.
