tire questions

boat question 455 olds

I am getting a new 2001 Jeep Cherokee sport.

If I got a 3" lift, will I have driveline vibes? and could I run 31x12.50 on 15x10 rims?

there is a chance you wont get any vibes, but you probably will. you'll never know how bad they'll be until you lift it. i just lifted mine 3.5 inches and i got em pretty bad, but still driveable. you may have a better experience or a worse one.

A transfer case drop should cure it if you do have vibes.

31's should fit on a 3" lift, but expect some rubbing offroad, especially if you want to disconnect the swaybar. 31x12.50's would be even worse, because the wheel wells are pretty small.

extended bumpstops, trimming... there are ways to make it work, but a narrower tire would better suit a 3" lift on an '01 XJ.

Ive got a 94 XJ with a 3" lift no vibrations at all and im running 31x10.50's with no trouble

Yours has wider wheel wells and a better driveline angle to begin with. The '97 and newer XJ's had some changes made.

well, tcase drop didnt fix mine, doin an SYE this weekend. it probably would have worked with 1.5" drop, but i wasnt willing to go that far.

twisted copper is right about the tire size. 31x10.5" would be the best setup. unless you trim.

We dropped the TC of our '98 XJ only .5" when we lifted it 3", took care of all the vibes.

Stick with a narrower tire on a 7" or 8" rim and you'll do fine. Anything wider will really rub the lower control arms. You can convert the front to WJ lower control arms if you really want to run wide tires, they're clearanced for the tires at full lock.

Wow. It seems that the smaller lift and tire combo has more problems with newer Jeeps.

I used to have a 1995 Country with 33x12.50R15 tires on 15x10 rims witha 4" trailmaster lift and bushwackers. Also a 4.7 stroker kit.

My new Jeep is aimed to be practical and not extreme like my old one.

I'm simply trying to fit the widest mud terrain tire I can while keeping the lift as stock as possible. I feel more comfortable and handle trails better with wider tires - don't ask. ;) Any way I could run a 30x10.50 or 30x11.50 on 15x8 or 15x10 rims on a stock 2001?

Well. Let me change my question around. I would like to run as close to 12.5 inch wide tires on a stock suspension '01 XJ.

As said before, the wheelwells are pretty small, and the suspension sits low. To get that wide of a tire on the stock suspension, you would have to cut the snot out of the fenders and get really wide flares, because you would need wheels that would stick out really far.

The only XJ's I've seen running really wide tires are lifted 6-8 inches and are cut like crazy. That is for 33-35" tires though.

On the newer XJ's, the biggest tire that is recommended on a stock suspension is a measley 235/75R15. That is a 29" tire and pretty narrow.

I think your best bet would be to go with your 3" lift and 31x10.50x15's. You could run them on 15x8's with about 4.5" backspacing and you should be alright.

Don't worry about the vibes. If it is only 3" of lift it will be easily correctable. Jeeperjoe has a Rubicon Express 3.5" lift, which lifts the rear a good bit more than 3". If you have a true 3" lift, it will be fine with a small transfer case drop kit which is cheap and easy to install.

Icyfridge, how long ago did you get rid of that old jeep. I swear I saw that thing around me. I live in Putnam County, NY.

I got rid of it like 2 months ago for a 2004 WRX. Then I wrecked my WRX. Now looking for a 2001 Jeep. :) I am from around the Buffalo, NY area.

any opinions on a 3" BDS suspension lift? It comes with trackbar relocation and a T'case drop bracket.

Ah. I know I keep jumping around a lot.

Anyone have any opinions on the stiffest shock for a stock height cherokee? I still want to retain a nice road ride.

I was thinking along the lines of trailmaster SSV shocks.

RE: Antone lose their JEEP?

I know. I know... I'm diggin up old threads. I didn't want to repost. Anywhoo, 3" lift running GREAT. I like the 15x7 rims with 31x10.5 Futura Dakotas. have trimmed my front endcaps and NO RUB at full stuff with my 31's.

Still looking for an opinion on running 15x10 with 31x12.50 tires. Possible or not? 15x10 with 31x10.50? I'm not into rocks, but serious MUD!!! I need the flotation.

RE: Steering Box Bolt

wouldnt put 31x10.5's on 15x10's, even the 31x12.5's would be pushing it....

i believe max recommended wheel width is 15x8 for 31x10.5" tires, but just because you go 2 inches wider on the tires doesnt mean you can just go ahead and do 2 inches more on the wheels too.

That tire/rim size works, but as I stated earlier on that's a wide setup for an XJ with 3" of lift.

To do it you'll need to get wheels with alot less backspacing than the 5.25" stock wheels to avoid contact with your lower control arms. Doing this will cause your tires to hit your flares/body when flexing, so you would have to cut sheet metal too. You could relocate your stock flares (see Mingez - he did his this way) or get a set of cut-out type flares like Bushwacker or Rusty's (although I hear Rusty's flares are a bit brittle).

It can be done, and you are right - less weight per inch of tire will help in the mud, but you need to get the right BS and trim accordingly.

Interco recommends 15x10 for all of their 31x12.50 tires.
i stand corrected. take some pics if you decide to go with that set up, i'm interested to see how the tire looks on the wheel.
