trachometer and speedometer question...

ok, so i was riding around earlier (TJ) with some friends, right? and all of a sudden the "check gauges" light comes on and my trachometer and speedometer just like, shut down. I take the her home and look around to see if i could find the problem... nothing seemed wrong. So my other friend came over to assist, but found nothing wrong... he then said, "dude... i wish i had a jeep..." so i decided, what the hell, ill let him drive it around the block... sure enough, within a few minutes my gauges came back to life... whats the problem?

and now that i think about it... i remember my dad having the same problem and hitting the dash to get it working again... hmmm, is there a more permanent fix (a DIY fix, please...)?

No probs here!! Sparky's a good man, as are many, many folks on here. Just pay it forward..........some noob posts about something that you've read about.........answer them with the link! Not much flaming here........I'll search for someone every now and then........as folks have done for me. Long as you solve the problem, that's all that really matters.

It's a very common problem in TJ's and XJ's. Last time it happened to me I hit the top of the dash so hard I thought I'd break something, but it hasn't happened since
