Doesn't matter that they are both 231j, just means it's a 231 from a 'j'eep. The Cherokee 231j likely has a 23 spline input if it came from a 4.0L auto, yours is a 21 spline input because it's from a 2.5L 5spd.

I know the 231j inside and out, I build a lot of them for jeepers who have either broken them or are upgrading from a full--time transfer case to the 231j.

No, the tailshaft and tailshaft housing are different. The parts could be interchanged if he knew how to rebuild a transfer case.

so i guess it could work but it would be quite a work switching parts!!! well i found another one that is from a 01 tj and that seems more promising. here is the link to it
