transfercase

I may be wrong but I do not think the 205 will fit between your frame rails. It is a big t-case, an awful lot of beef for a v6 in a light weight CJ. The rear shaft will be very short I would bet about 14".

your questions theres tons of info on these conversions and get the correct answer the first time from someone like me who already done this conversion
If you want to do it right you need to do the research to help you through the tough spots you'll find diagrams and all kinds of good pointers on the do's and dont's done with this conversion and also find all the parts needed through vendors and other donor vehicles at the cheapest prices , I also added to the list on google with correct part numbers and cost from each vendor I used, also a step by step break down of all parts used and cost with a total cost to look forward too before you reach the empty stop point , this list should help with a good budget and point you in the direction your needing to go , google cj3b conversions, or cj5 conversions or even parts list needed cj series jeep conversions ,
If you do your own homework you will find more about every question you asked over and over !!!
Just remember

I agree a 20 or 300 are good upgrades, but you might have some driveline issues since both have a centered rear output. Your 18 has an offset rear output as does your rear axle. Unless you really make a lot of power I think the 18 should last, they were used behind the 225v6 without any issues. They have held up to many high power small blocks, and some big blocks too.

okay i think we have it figured out now 4.3 v-6 th350 auto transmission with a dana 18 transfer case all we need is the adapterplate for the transfer case then we are in business. does that sound like a good combo.

Well, I started to swap mine 3B over to a Buick V6 with a 350TH behind it and after the measuring . . . . that rear driveshaft was sure gonna be a shorty. I went BACK to the T90 traded other parts for a good F134 I4 Willys motor and the buick still sits. It's been done but ain't gonna be done on MY Jeep.

now me personally i would stay with the Jeep parts i feel the same about my Scout no chevy motors. but my friend Scott has his own ideas.

the 205 is a great box when low maxed and doubled to a 203, and you can fit it between the frame rails, but.. it just will not be clocked flat. and unless your stretching your wheel base, like mentioned, your rear shaft will be pretty short. I don't think you can shift the drive train foward enough in a 65 to get a ideal rear shaft angle. I would say go with the 20. someone please correct me if I am wrong but, d th350 came in some FSJ's stock and were mated to a d20 case. I would search for that transmission (or parts) and that case. (actually, I would look for a sm 420 or T18 with deep first gear)
